My copy was good at 1.8, great by 2.2, and absolutely infreakincredible at f8 - some of the sharpest pictures I"ve ever taken.

If you have a properly working copy (i've owned a few now) f2.2-2.8 is the best compromise between speed and sharpness. f4+ has absolutely stunning sharpness corner to corner. So I guess it depends on how you define sweet spot.

As with any lens, stopped down about two stops from wide open to about f/8. Generally lenses are best at f/5.6-8 or so.

LOL !

Does Nikon have a Laughing stock lens like this one !

I still have the better built original MK1 version and like the cheap built MKII the sweetspot is 5.6-8.0 which will require the use of an external flash indoors at least on my trials to obtain optimum corner sharpness.
You can still get some nice captures at f2.2 with good indoor lighting.

The laughing part is that most their older primes don't even AF on the cheaper digital bodies.

I think it's like F4 to F5.6. I've taken some sharp images with mine in the studio at those fstops.

Look at the MTF charts in the test results at Photozone.de for that lens - sharpest aperture is obvious. Nikon's 50/1.8 is way better than Canon's. But, so are most other 50/1.8's.

same here

I seem to have a decent copy. Good pics wide open...but they get better the farther up I go.
