I'm doing a recruiting video for a local H.S. Football player. He is being recruited by some Big East and ACC Schools. His Dad is looking for some more exposure, and the video will be sent out to D1 schools.

It's the typical type highlight reel, with spot highlights on the player prior to the play. The question i have is.. His Dad suggested we incorporate some pictures in with the video. He wanted to have a shoot with him in either under-armor or while lifting. The kid is ripped! Especially for being 16. Is this something that is typically included in a recruiting video?

For those who have done anything like this.. I'm looking for suggestions on what type of photos (if any) and how to shoot them.

BTW.. he is being recruited as an 'athlete' or safety. 6' 190lbs 4.41

Thanks

This isnt speaking as a photographer, but as a previous athlete that went through the recruiting process...
I went throught the typical highlight reel business and selecting the right clips and all that, and I would say that scouts could care less about what he looks like. If they are actually interested, they already know he is 6' 190lbs and runs a 4.4. He has to be pretty ripped to do that. And most every college recruiter expects them to be in great shape. They will evaluate his weightlifting and strength once his senior season is over.

I say leave it out. I think it would come across as cocky probably.

Thanks..

That was my thought exactly.. I was trying to figure out how to do it without looking cocky. If anything, I may compose a picture with him on the left third of the frame with his stats on the right to end the video.

I have some buddies who are involved with D1 football and the other thing they comment on not caring much about is a tape full of big play highlights. Like his body structure, they expect that he is going to make some big plays at the HS level. The videos they comment on the most are the ones that show the kid doing a variety of strength and agility drills where they can evaluate form, technique and potential.

The other thing is that if they make it more than 3 minutes into a tape, that is unusual, so keep it short and to the point.

I was going to suggest that but figured it was the norm for this type of thing.
Its okay to show a few really good highlights, but showing fundamental work is very important.

Thanks Kevin.. That definitely makes sense.

I'll see if we can set up some agility drills. They had told be he matched Percy Harvin's 3-cone drill number at Penn State camp. What are the other ones? 20yd shuttle, 60yd shuttle?

As far as the strength, do they want to see how many reps @ 225? Or is that more for the Lineman/LB/FB/TE ?

There are a bunch of them you can do. It might be easier to do a google search on something like"strength and agility football skills" or similar and take a look at the results. This would give you a variety of possibilities and you could better match up a set of things that show his strengths as well as would work logistically. You might also check with the coach or parent to find out what types of drills they did at the Penn State camp and use that as a guide since that is a top notch D1 program.

The bench reps is one possible strength display but may not be as critical for him as it would for linemen and backs. Things like standing vertical jump, broad jump, etc. might be better representations and can be done in a shorter amount of time. Use the mic and announce specific results would be one other suggestion.

Good luck with the video.
