I'm considering buying some flashes, wireless transmitters and receivers so I might begin taking portratis of my grandchildren. Unfortunately it is a new world for me and I have many questions.

I have a Canon 420EX flash and was was considering buying a CyberSync transmitter and receivers but now I'm not sure if that is what I should do. The 420EX will not allow me to vary the flash output and requires manual operation. Is this acceptable or is it better to get a flash that allows for different power levels and one that is automatic?

Also it is my understanding that CyberSync equipment will only work on manaully operated flashes, is this correct?

Thanks for any assistance.

You can't use radio triggers with a 420EX because of the lack of manual power control, you'll need a different flash.

A 430EX II (external link) will do a good job, and consider skyports (external link) along with Cybersyncs. If you get a 580EX II (external link) you'll be able to use the 420EX as a slave using wireless ETTL - that might be a better option than radio slaves.

I Think you mean that the 420ex is automatic and will not operate manually. You want a flash that will allow you to control the power output levels.

Your 420ex uses the canon ettl system which is automatic. Most trigger systems dont use the ettl system, those that do are rather expensive.

Cybersyncs are simple but reliable triggers that sync your flash. They do not transmit anything other than the fire signal.

You have two options that are reasonably affordable. Get another flash with manual controls like the vivitar 285's or YN flashes. Or consider getting a long off camera cable like the one flashzebra.com sells. That would allow you to use your flash off camera in automatic mode.
