I am considering changing out my 70-200 f4 non-is with an IS version. Since I may shop for a used one, I was wondering what the history of this lens is. When was it first introduced, have there been upgrades to the IS system and if so when. And anything else an educated buyer should know.
Thanks in advance.
Dan

Check www.the-digital-picture.com (external link) for the review and check www.canon.com (external link) website for the lens history.
Nothing has changed since the introduction only a few years ago.
The best zoom Canon is currently making.
Very sharp wide open, extremely fast and precise AF, great IS and relatively lightweight.
More sharp than the 70-200 f2.8 IS for half the weight.
Also weather-sealed.
A great one from Canon !

I'm sure others can fill in more, but the f/4 IS is the newest out of the bunch, and has a fairly new generation of IS. I THINK (and may be wrong) it is the newest IS version until the 100 Macro L.

I have read a few people saying that the 70-200 f/4 IS is the sharpest zoom ever made, or the sharpest Canon zoom ever made. It is apparently a tweaked optical design compared to the f/4 non-IS, which is no slouch on it's own.

I believe I read somewhere the 200 f/2 had a newer/better IS system. Maybe where I read it, they were wrong. I really wouldn't worry about the IS it uses, as it is still better than the 55-250's which worked excellently.

If I weren't mainly a wildlife shooter I'd be picking up the 4 IS instead of the 100-400.

Check out this site: http://www.canon.com …_70-200_f1.4l_is_usm.html (external link)
It's pretty good giving history, year of introduction, price (in yen)...etc.
I hope that helps..

BTW: Great lens choice. It's the best lens I ever used.
Good luck
