Mark Astmann posted some news this morning on the Fred Miranda site regarding grids for Elinchrom modifiers:

This is probably good news (at least until we see the prices).

Elinchrom grids sure would be good news. I suppose grids for softboxes and octas is great but why leave out the strips? UGH! Makes no sense to me.

Interesting. I actually bought the hooded diffuser for my 39" deep octa a while back, thinking it might give me some light control and that I might need it anyway when they finally made grids for this box. After looking at it though, I actually had the same idea that the solution would be to create a hooded diffuser/grid where the grid was sewn into the hooded diffuser and attached the same way as the one I have without the grid. Of course, now I have this almost useless hooded diffuser...I bet they'll be expensive with this design though.

I'm glad I didn't buy Elinchrom strips now that I'm seeing this latest development. I tired to hold out in the hopes that Elinchrom would come though but that was not meant to be.

On the other hand, I am looking forwards to grids for their other modifiers. As long as prices are reasonable there are still Elinchrom modifiers that I'd like to have, and grids will make them even more attractive.

I think that may be a premature "UGH!", Robert. Mark said that Elinchrom would not be offering grids for the strip boxes in response to an inquiry specifically about grids for strips. He went on to say that a Canadian company had been authorized to make grids for all Elinchrom softboxes. Optimist that I am, I took this to mean strip boxes as well.

You could be right... these days I'm more of a "the capacitor is half discharged" rather than "the capacitor is half charged" type of person...lol

Even if they come out with grids for the strips I'll have strips with grids for my lights. I can't wait any more. The Elinchrom strip with grid would be great for location work but in the studio I'll have my strips setup on speed rings and hanging with my other modifiers so they're ready to go.

Robert, what strips and grids are you currently using>? I've been holding out for the elinchroms to come out with a strip with grids too long. I just need one and haven't found anything I'm really excited about for the elinchroms.

Not to hijack my own thread, but have you decided whose strips you'll be getting, Robert? The 1' x 4' Creative Light recessed front strip looks like it might be a good, cost-effective option.

Since I wanted something to play with now, and I'll be using it mostly as an accent/hair light and background light, I just ordered one of these (similar in size to the Creative Light strip box, but cheaper):

Figured that, for the price, it's worth a shot. Comes with a grid and Elinchrom speedring.

I absolutely love Elinchrom modifiers but I'm not married to them. Like you guys I've researched and done price shopping and have always come back to the same few solutions... Chimera, Photoflex and now Creative Light. Of course there are others but if you want good materials and construction, a well made fabric grid for a somewhat reasonable price (Chimera grids are barely in the realm of being reasonably priced), durable and available in at least a small and medium size, then it's hard to find. Many of the inexpensive solutions use materials that are not as nice, with thinner rods, lighter material that leaks light, and are not as convenient to set up and breakdown.

Having said all that, I'm going to have the first set of Cheetah strips available. I've got a 9" x 36" and two 14" x 55" strips with grids arriving just after the new year.

Lighttools (external link)will be making them and they are the same company that makes them for Chimera.
(This) (external link) might have had something to do with them coming to a "agreement" of who will be making what. Add attorney fees into (these) (external link) prices and you might get a idea of what the final cost will be

Those prices are ridiculous... costs creep close towards some box prices..

How can i get a fake Louis Vuitton purse for $25 in New York but i can't get a grid for like $75. ? Switch the people off making these crappy purses and start making grids! Apparently that's where the money is at.
