With prices dropping like mad, I'm about to snag a 1D3 from a local photog here in NYC. I have a question for those of you that have had the AF issues.

This body is within the SN range for the recall, but has never been sent in because the owner shot airshows and sports with it and never had any AI-Servo issues. So I'm hoping that this is one of the few that haven't had the issue. If it's not, for those of you that have sent your 1D3 into Canon for the sub-mirror assembly repair, and have installed the new firmware, are you now happy with the camera's AF?

Name is Peter and here is my gear:
Canon 5D II, Canon 7D, Canon 40D
Glass - Zeiss 21 f/2.8 ZE, Canon 35 f/1.4L, Canon 40 f/2.8 STM, Canon 24-70 f/2.8
L, Canon 85 f/1.2L II, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, Canon 500 f/4L IS
Speedlite 580ex II, 430ex - Gitzo GT-3541XLS w/ Arca B1

I had (now sold) one of the earlier ones and never had a problem with it. But I did eventually get the sub mirror fix done. There are also a few more fixes that they would do, including replacing the mirror box assembly and ending in that "recall" they did earlier this year. (Spring time IIRC)

I think after the last round of "recalls", the 1DMKIII is considered officially fixed, not to discount those who have real issues with it.

Again, mine was fine...with or without the fix.

My 1D3 is from within the original affected group, and the first owner had it sent in under the recall. I have no problems with focus tracking and accuracy.

I have not sent mine in for the most recent voluntary update because Canon stated that this was for people having problems, and I'm not having problems.

I bought a 1D3 refurbished body last summer. It was in the range that had AF problems, and it had problems even worse than I had expected.

A call to Canon NJ got a UPS pre-paid label sent to me. It was shipped to them on a Thursday and was back in my hands the next Tuesday. AF has worked as it should ever since.

Very cool. I'm picking up the 1D3 on Monday, so I'm looking forward as having it as a backup to the 5D.
