if you shoot tethered is pretty much the only reason i know of to not have a card in

Well, that's a good reason I guess. But it seems like there would be some sort of override built into the EOS utility for this. I guess it could be used without a card with the Wi-Fi transmitter too, like when storing photos on a USB drive. Again, seems like there could be an override for this, and not have it enabled as "standard".

Make sure the camera with the lens you've mounted and battery works without having to find a card... do it all the time...

I don't see where this requires a shot to be taken. The battery powers up the camera and shows up as full/half/whatever, and the lens would still AF and IS would work without actually pressing the shutter release all the way. The only reason to release the shutter would be if you're testing to see if the shutter/mirror mechanism works too.

I wonder how many of us here regularly have our cameras laying around without cards in them. The only time my 40D doesn't have a card in it is when I've got it in my card reader, and most of the time I swap in another card while I do that.

You didn't get a message on the LCD that says something about "no CF Card" or something like that?
Surely there is a custom function that you can set so this won't happen again. All of my bodies have had that option.

Did you try to check out your histogram on the LCD? I would think it would say something like "no picture".

Sorry, I didn't see the part about the LCD no working. You need to get that fixed ASAP. Otherwise, how can you expect to change settings when you need to?

i agree completely and it should at least be default to not work with no cf card so i dont have to remember to turn it off every time i get a new camera. i once went out shooting for at least an hour before i realized i never put a card in and after that ill never do it again

A, why would you ever shoot without a card in, and B you didn't go to review anything you shot throughout the course of this 'important' event? I know my memory card got put in before my battery when I got my camera lol. It sucks but I guess you live and learn.

The OP's LCD is broken. States it in the initial post.

You don't leave a card in the camera? The only time I ever take the card out of the camera is to change it in the field or download the pictures. The rest of the time there is a card in the camera, even if it's stored away...

i never leave the card in or the batteries for that matter. when i got done shooting and start packing all the batteries go in the top compartment and all the cards go into a pelican case i have for them so when i get home i can get the cards easily to start editing and the batteries are right on top of the bag for easy recharging. this way i dont have to pull the bodies out of the bag unless i need them for something specific but that rarely happens

sorry to hear your problem but theres nothing to do. Its a pain in th @$$ however think its set as default for all the dumb salesmen (like the ones who give false rumours as part of their sale spiel) so they can show the camera without a card in and temporarily show them without a need to keep blanking cards. Think there was a shop that found some dodgy photos on a shop model some time ago.

Sorry to hear about your loss of images. That sucks!

In the viewfinder it also flashes CARD where the shutter speed would be if no card is in place but I too switched the camera as soon as I got it to not shoot if there is no card in it. Doesn't happen often but sometimes when I'm at home and I'm shooting and copying I'll forget to put it back and I'm glad of the reminder -- it means I just lose one shot, not a bunch.

But now that wouldn't make sense for stores putting display models out now would it? No yahoo at best buy is going to want to change that setting every time they put a new camera out on display are they? Not with all the different makes and models that come out constantly.

There should be a menu setting to prevent you from making this mistake again.

I took my 9 year old son out on a photo shoot one day and gave him my 20D (I had my 40D). After we'd made about 4 or 5 stops, he said "what does 'no CF card' mean?" Ugh. I felt like a horrible dad for forgetting to put a card in his camera. We want back to the sites we'd shot at so he could get the shots again. But I still felt lousy about it. Since then, the first thing I do it shut off the menu option that allows the camera to shoot with no memory card.

i dont see why not considering half the electronics in the store are in demo mode that they have to turn on and for each one on display how many thousands are sold that would benefit from having it turned off by default
