Been at Etown many times over 15 years as a racer and a guy with a camera. Pretty laid back as far as taking photos any place at the track. Now getting on the track side walls where the pros hang out could be a different story. If you meet up with a few racers you may be able to walk on the track behind the burnout boxes as I seen friends of racers able to walk in that area. I think on a slow race day you can talk to the people in the office and maybe get a pass to shoot on track. They are a easy going bunch and I would suspect it would not be impossible to get track side. that said with a 100 or 200 mm range you can still get good shots from the stands.

Every shot here was taken from the stands on the spectator side in the handicap stands. http://heck.zenfolio.com/p765039862 (external link)

THat is good to know! Thank you for the info... I would have hated to drive out there with my camera just to find out I was not able to bring it in with me... I might try to see is I can make it in the track, but after seen your pics, the stands would do just fine...

Questionnnnn, spent half my work day looking for an answer hehe...
Has to do with the legal side of photographing in NYC. All I gathered so far is photography is allowed pretty much anywhere, unless otherwise noted by signs or property owner. Its legal in parks so long as "equipment" is not being used or its not being for commercial use. I couldn't find any information pertaining to beaches. Can I set up a strobe? Use a reflector? How about in parks? Or is "equipment" considered anything I cant hold with my hand, including 1 damn strobe. It seems a little ridiculous if I need a permit for such, I mean I understand if I come there with a team, set up 4 strobes, have 6' reflectors, but ONE measly light?

I'm sure some of you have done strobist stuff around the city, did you get a permit? Did you just get lucky and not get hassled by anyone? I'm not talking about Manhattan even, perhaps somewhere "quiet" , especially at a time with very low volume of people... Private parks are a whole other story, which requires permission from security/owner, which I still think is a little ridiculous for a single light set up.
I haven't felt so restricted until I started reading into the laws/rules, now it seems like I can't even go out with anything other than my camera with a flash strapped to the top.

I think if your gonna make the effort to bring strobes and set up some kinda shoot then apply for a permit. It is free. Now I know first hand that not all parks allow not only photos but even cameras lol. I was in Randalls island park and was told I needed a permit when i was just hand holding my camera shooting at the waters edge. The cop said signs are posted and I needed to delete the photos.

Here is one of the deleted photos.

If I want to use strobes, the permit is 300!!!! (according to the website). It's free if using a handheld camera, and a tripod to support such camera is also allowed lol
This is bs, and I can't imagine nypd doing anything other than asking me to stop, if even that much... At least around here where I live.
Btw reading up on the laws all day I found out you don't even have to show them your pictures, especially make you delete them... They can however take you in, get a warrant and then do how they please lol, there are a few stories here on potn in fact.

The hell with that. Go take the shots and chances are no one will bother you. Just don't smoke while shooting and leave the trans fat snacks at home. lol

It's simple. If a police officers asks me to stop doing something, I usually stop doing whatever it is that I am doing.

+1 No one bothers me from shooting and i see plenty of wedding photogs in central park with strobes setup and no on says a word. Now that i think about it ive seen people shoot with strobes on the street with no problem.

Yeah, I did an engagement session in CP and didn't have any issues. I wasn't blatant about it though. I had a lightstand, speedlight, and an umbrella and used it a few times I needed it. No issues at all.

One time I was near a Federal building around the Wall Street area. A police officer (might have been a rent-a-cop) came up to me and asked what I was doing. I told him I am a photographer and was just taking photos of some interesting architecture of the building. He asked me to show him the photos. I did. He told me I need to erase them. I happily obliged. Went home, and recovered the photos later.

Then again, I guess I could have resisted and maybe have had a night stick shoved up my crapper and then get rich quick!
