Thanks ill look this over! I really just want to start off with one flash and learn from there.

Mike leave this for thursday! I want to make this but i have a game tomorrow night

How about we do a shoot on night time photography??? Brooklyn Bridge Park. It is not so much about who has the best angle but who knows how to do long exposure shots. I want to do some wicked night time shots....

Thanks Victor. Flash is something im really intrested in. Epseically off camera flash since its one of the reasons why i bought the 7D. However, its a whole new world for me to understand in terms of setting up the flash and understanding how it affects an image. Ive used my on board flash for those rare occasions when im close enough to provide some fill light to fight off harsh sun but thats about it.

OCF is fun - this is me playing with a CST-CSRB set, a HONL 1/8 speed grid and my roommates dog, trying to figure out my max sync speed - which is 1/320 on my 7D. Manual exposure 1/320, f/5.6, ISO 100, 85mm. i forgot the flash power setting.

this is without flash, just available light (he was chewing on an empty bottle, his treat for being patient):

I have an average one from Manfrotto. As long as it is not windy, it should be fine. What tripod you have???

i have something similar, paid $90 at BH some time ago, and worked fine with the rebel, but my gear is heavier now, so it feels flimsy on this tripod. I should sell it, as it's gathering dust.

Get a tripod. You can get an average one for a bit under $100. Go pay a visit at BH. I have a Gitzo carbon fiber monopod, a single carbon fiber stick for crying out loud, for $300. I use it to support my 500L.

Cool! So Brooklyn Bridge Park at 7pm?

P.S. This shot would have been win, without the smudge on my lens from setting the cam down on the rocks :(

Am I missing something here?
Are you going to shoot when it's dark outside? If so, why even bother with ND filters? Just stop the lens down and you'll get long enough exposures to get the effect you are looking for...

Here's one where there was still some light outside...

All taken with my 1DMKIII + 16-35L f22.

You can get the same effect using filters and a shorter exposure time..depends on the type of filter though. I think he meant he wanted to use ND filters during the day though.

Depends on how much light you have.
If you wait until it gets dark outside, then you really don't need ND filters for a shot like this.

Perhaps stopping down to f22 isn't the most ideal thing to do, but I'm not one to be concerned too much about diffraction and on a shot like this, you want as much DOF as possible.

Tripod, MLU, remote release or timer...

30 sec exposure to get the water silky smooth for reflection of the mountain. I actually forgot to bring my ND filters so I had to wait over an hour for the sun to set.

6 minute exposure to get some star trails in there. I had to MF on this one b/c it was so dark...
