I think he meant he wanted to use ND filters during the day though.

OK, that's different then. You would definitely need ND filters to get shots like that during the daytime.

I think I might have had an ND on this one...or it could have been a CPL. Can't remember. But this was obviously during the day.

30 sec exposure to get the water silky smooth for reflection of the mountain. I actually forgot to bring my ND filters so I had to wait over an hour for the sun to set.

6 minute exposure to get some star trails in there. I had to MF on this one b/c it was so dark...

30sec f11

30sec f13

Very nice shots!!!! I was thinking about using a ND filter for some dusk shots and maybe night time. I get one anyway. :) I want to control the highlight from street lights. Long exposure shots tend to blow out the highlights. I want some foggy, cloudy like effect on the water too.

Mike, I was thinking about doing a night time shoot as a group maybe sometimes later in the week.

Cool! So Brooklyn Bridge Park at 7pm?

P.S. This shot would have been win, without the smudge on my lens from setting the cam down on the rocks :(

Mike you need to correct your horizon.

Then yeah, you definitely want at least an ND filter.
When I shot that photo of Mt. Fuji, I thought I had my ND filters with me, but then realized I didn't. I had to tell my wife I was going to take a bit more time with the photos. It didn't help I was there with my in-laws!

Anyways, waited about 1 hour and 15 minutes, got the shot, and got the hell out of there! ND filter could have saved me lots of time!

I've got 2. I think it's a 1 stop and 2 stop one. Not sure. I'll stack them up if need be. Heck, I would also stack up the CPL if I need to do so!

That's what I did here...stacked up ND's...I knew my wife was not patient that day, so it came in handy.

It was a throw away because of the blur, I just like it because of the star bursts. Trust me that's not the one I printed for my show.

Those shots are the main reason why i want filters. Tame the sky a bunch since i love landscape shots.

Remember, we are in NYC, we don't get snowy mountains and waterfalls. :)

Mike, you have a website for your show? How about a shot of your show? What show it is?

Naw it was nothing major, it is still up though. I didn't bring my camera to the opening.

If you want to "tame the sky" then you might want to look into Graduated ND filters as well. I have one, but I don't use it all that much...

Probably would have worked on this one however...I had to recover the shadows quite a bit to get some of the foreground details back. This was shot a while ago with a 5DC I used to have.

why can't you do an HDR?
nothing too extreme, just something to be able to get the highlights back.

Seriously, do you make money off of it??? Hopefully, it is not something that costs a lot of money to set it up.

I think HDR is "unpredictable." I tried the photomatrix as well as the photoshop option.

I'm not a big fan of HDR. We can always use more DR on our cameras however I tend to like results that look the way it did when I shot it or as I imagined it to be.

I think HDR, when done right is fantastic. Of course it's rarely done right.
Perhaps I shouldn't say rarely...it's quite often not done right.

I played around with it a few years ago. Just never really bothered. Actually just never really needed it.

Here are a couple of faked ones. Just played around with the saturation, levels, etc...

QUOTED IMAGE

Thanks Nick. As you can tell i dont know much in regards to the filter world. Now whats the difference between a ND filter and a GND. The gradual from what i can tell applies it to a portion of the image we are trying to capture. For example in a sunset picture you would rotate it to tame the sky leaving your foreground alone. So i would assume an ND filter would apply to the whole image. My question would be then why not under or over expose the shot instead of using a filter?
