That hour of day on that side of the bridge is a no go. lol.. I should of just went on the other side and let the late day sun light it up for me. It felt like the trip was a total waste of time but thinking about it I say its a lesson I wont forget. Thanks for the help guys its really appreciated.

I don't see what you're trying to argue about. Your personal inability prevent your camera from metering what you don't want it to meter does not validate anything.

I'd make a suggestion for you too

See here's the thing... Nick and Vick have both taken and properly exposed the kind of shot you've only read about. I think you need to do more shooting and less talking. You say they are wrong? Prove it. Go out there and take YOUR OWN SHOTS using the method you've simply READ about.

There is no need for back and forth banter that will only lead to people having a sour feeling toward you. Just have a shoot off and kill the back and forth.

FWIW - No one likes a mouthy book smart novice..but everyone can get behind someone that has read and wants to learn how it applies or doesn't in the real world...dig?

You meter off the blue sky as far away from the direct sunlight as possible.

In certain conditions and scenes that may work, but in this specific example take a look at the sky, particularly the blue part. It's decently exposed. Maybe, slightly under exposed, yes, but almost there. Given that fact, our cameras, and I am collectively talking about all Canon/Nikon DSLR's here, can't handle the dynamic range. That's just simple fact.

properly exposed single image > multiple merged images
I trust Bryan Peterson more than Nick.

That's fine. I actually trust myself more than any book I read, including Perterson's books. Ironically, he'd probably agree with all of us who says the scene cannot be properly exposed for 100% given the limitations of cameras. But what do I know? I'm just Nick Nobody...:D

Yeah, that's a tough shot actually. You are shooting into the sun, the sky is bright, the rest is darker...

You can always overexpose the sky some and recover in post so you retain more detail on the bridge, etc.

Or, bracket the shot and merge/HDR in post.

Also the bridge is in the middle of the frame, and at a pretty "flat" angle, therefore you have too much water and sky.

This was the right answer from the get go. Would have saved a lot of discussion. In that shot i would have gone to bracketing (dont listen to me i bracket everything, and no MDJAK im not talking about bracketing Nick and YOU to see you both properly exposed before me )

Also listen to Victor. Bird shooters know a heck of a lot when it comes to meetering/exposing shots in harsh out door conditions. I frequent the bird threads just to learn more about it. In the end experience to me will always trump what a book says. If all books were right then we wouldnt have new ones released every few months showing a different way to shoot the same thing bw!

I think your shot is doable if you are shooting a Carl Zeiss 21mm....:) The Carl Zeiss has the ability to suppress the blue highlight to certain extend. Very flare resistance. Is better to post adjust the exposure of a slightly over-exposed shot than pushing up the exposure of an under-exposed shot. Again, next time, bracket your shots in between -1 to +1 exposure compensation, or maybe -+2 stops. Like I said earlier, your camera would always meter off the sky more than the foreground. Here is a panoroma shot I took. Guess where the sun was? About 1 oclock. The shot works because it creates a somewhat surreal ambient....Of course I bracketed all three exposures here to see which of the looks I like. I have one of the exposures with 1 stop overexposed and the boardwalk was properly exposed. Unfortunately, the sky was blown out towards the sunny reflection on the ocean.

Quick and Dirty run through with Content Aware Fill:

Before:

After:

This took 3 clicks and a few mins..yea the sky got F'd but the birds alone would have taken 20 mins to an hour before.

Is kind of neat....:) Hmmm.....wondering how it would work with bird photography when you need to remove a branch in front the bird while making the bird whole again.
