You meter off the blue sky as far away from the direct sunlight as possible.
In certain conditions and scenes that may work, but in this specific example take a look at the sky, particularly the blue part. It's decently exposed. Maybe, slightly under exposed, yes, but almost there. Given that fact, our cameras, and I am collectively talking about all Canon/Nikon DSLR's here, can't handle the dynamic range. That's just simple fact.

That's fine. I actually trust myself more than any book I read, including Perterson's books. Ironically, he'd probably agree with all of us who says the scene cannot be properly exposed for 100% given the limitations of cameras. But what do I know? I'm just Nick Nobody...
