May 29th and 30th is the Jones Beach air show. I went last year and got some of my first airshow shots. The conditions were not the best with a hazy sky and the early sun not in the best spot but its still worth the effort. I did pretty good in my book with just hand holding my 200mm from the beach. Took the D700 for a spin during lunch and I must say I like it a lot. You really don't lose too much from the D3. I decided not to get the grip precisely b/c I also have the D3 for when I need 9fps.

I would still say the 1DMKIII's AF system is a little bit more robust than even the D3. But again, compared to the 5DMKII? No contest. There are pros and cons with everybody. I miss the 21MP resolution, that's for sure. There are other quirks operationally speaking, that I still need to get used to. But overall, it's been a very positive experience so far. The two bugaboos for me remain the view finder and weak saturation inherit to all Nikons vs. Canon. http://www.Michael-Bernard.com

The 95% (if that much) VF of the D700 is an annoyance, but it's nothing new. The 5DMKII has a 98% VF so you still need to watch how you frame things.

If you are talking about color saturation, then sure, it's a bit different and subdued on the Nikons. I am indifferent to this however as I usually play around with contrast/saturation post anyways. They are both fine cameras... In so far as the view finders, it's noticeable going back to back on the bodies. And yea, I meant the saturation, but it's all good. I enjoy the camera tremendously. http://www.Michael-Bernard.com

It takes getting used to having to frame that much tighter. But I suspect once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. The only issue is shooting side by side with the D3 and remembering to have to frame things tighter on the D700.
