Same here, i just let the histogram hit the right site.
In adobe camera raw, i pull the highlights down.

But if its a nice blowout picture, i turn it to a black and white image.

Thanks guys, I'm off to the 1st round of the New Zealand mx champs this sunday, and want to make the most of it without blowing out highlights. Ha ha !!
I will give suggestions a go.

Heres a few shots from the 1st round of NZ Motox Champs. It was very wet and sticky first thing, but dried out through the day.
I managed to keep my highlights in check guys with your advice.
