I'm going to my first football game with my camera on Sunday night for the Cowboys-Redskins game. Im 7 rows up from the 50 so im going to bring my 55-250 i just got. Anyone have any pointers using my camera tomorrow with the lighting on the football field?

I'm not sure of the lighting conditions at the stadium, but in any case, try to keep your (SS) shutter speed above @1/500th, as anything lower you'll get motion blur. Always do a white balance check, anticipate action, rather than holding your finger down on the shutter button and hope you get a "good" shot....Oh, and have fun!

Thats a good range for football (from 175mm to 250mm). Change your drive mode from single shot to continuous shooting. This way you can follow the Redskins running back as he runs thru the Dallas defense, or focus on Romo and run off 5 or 6 shots of him getting creamed! By taking multiple shots of a play, you heavily increase your chances of nailing a great shot. Setting the AF to AI SERVO isn't a bad idea either.

You may have noticed, I hate the Cowboys!

Try to catch as much sideline action as you can, i.e., players with helmets off, coaches, cheerleaders, etc. You probably won't get a lot of really good action play shots given your shooting position.

Have fun, keep warm and just be lucky you're not attending the Raiders at Cleveland Browns game Sunday!!!

From that distance, 250mm will be useful for plays in front of you.

230mm from a XTi, which also uses EF-S lenses.

Any further away, and a longer lens will be more useful, but the small size of the 55-250mm makes it inconspicuous, which can help in places where people may not necessarily like DSLR's.

Little football photography comes from the 50 yard line, because that area belongs to the team benches and is off limits to photographers. Most images come from the 30's to the end zone and behind the end line.

For a night game, you'll need to use custom white balance and ISO 800 or higher.

200mm at another NFL stadium, where ISO 1600 was needed at f/5 to get 1/250. This play was from an end zone and around 15-20 yards out.

Canon DSLR's tend to turn stadium lighting pink, so you'll need to find a white target on the field to set white balance.
