I'm going to my first football game with my camera on Sunday night for the Cowboys-Redskins game. Im 7 rows up from the 50 so im going to bring my 55-250 i just got. Anyone have any pointers using my camera tomorrow with the lighting on the football field?
From that distance, 250mm will be useful for plays in front of you.

230mm from a XTi, which also uses EF-S lenses.
Any further away, and a longer lens will be more useful, but the small size of the 55-250mm makes it inconspicuous, which can help in places where people may not necessarily like DSLR's.
Little football photography comes from the 50 yard line, because that area belongs to the team benches and is off limits to photographers. Most images come from the 30's to the end zone and behind the end line.
For a night game, you'll need to use custom white balance and ISO 800 or higher.

200mm at another NFL stadium, where ISO 1600 was needed at f/5 to get 1/250. This play was from an end zone and around 15-20 yards out.
Canon DSLR's tend to turn stadium lighting pink, so you'll need to find a white target on the field to set white balance.
