wow.. what a fun day..
chrismas day, watching tv..and eating lots of food..

after being at home all day long relaxing, i was restless.. wanted to do some photo work..

so i called up kathryn a junior high school Rep model for a quick shoot in the 29 degree weather.. LOL.. (we are building her Modeling portfolio more so than senior photos for high school) She is 6 feet tall and has a chance to make it in modeling.

Kathryn and i met during the fashion shoot i recently did for the Local Aveda store.. she was the Marie Antoinette white plastic bag wedding dress model..

she and i will be doing more work later next spring.. but for now.. we had 30 mins of winter ..

we had to work fast because it was freezing cold..
mom managed the coats, brother did the flash light for me to help with auto assist.. her dad helped moved the lights for me.. it was a good team work that made this bearable.

i had 2 alien bees .. one as a kicker with out any modifier on it.. bar cone..

and the other one had the beauty dish with a grid..

i picked the location because of the Xmas tree lights.. and the back ambient lighting..

I like #2 best. The lights in the background look so awesome and pretty. The only thing that irks me about #2 is the scarf/shirt combination. The two prints are very strange together but maybe that is what you were aiming for? Either way, great pic.

let me just say...like everyone on here..i'm a big fan of the phamster!

but for me,i think this is far from your best work.
#1 it looks like her face is slightly out of focus
#2 technically is perfect great sharpness/focus and lighting, I'm just not a fan or her staring away into nothing, her out fit screams stripper and stripper and Christmas bokeh don't work for me lol(not your fault pham!)
#3 is my favorite! my only grip would be i prefer a tighter crop would draw my eyes to the model and less to some of the dead space in the background.
#4 perfect exposure/lighting sharpness.. but she looks bored, and i don't know what she was thinking with the outfit..from the open toe shoes with the snow coming down to the granny scarf which clashes with the pink dress..(again not you pham, the model)

but to me the models look/attitude and matching wardrobe completes the artistic photography side..

i know you got a ton better in you....and i look forward to all your posts

Burr not sure I would want to do that shoot. :D She is a great sport for doing the shoot.
I like the lighting in most of these typical Phamtastic light but have to agree with Kompakt that in these photos the model feels a little detached not engaging the viewer. Doesn't have a very inviting feel to them.

CT,
everything is perfect except her facial expressions. she looks bored and disengaged. It is the phoographers task to contol that. You got the dzen of location and lighting. Communication with your models (even in that bitter cold) is another mount yet to conquer.
merry xmas, man, and I am looking forwars to see some snow shots from ya soon! :)

Phamster, I really like the lighting and outfits, and I love the location and composition; but I really don't like her facial expressions. I feel really disconnected. I'm with the bitter, cold cruel guy above :P (j/k Misha)

Seasons greetings phamster!

Although I'm wondering about the light just above her head in this shot, I really like #1.

@ all the responders..

the response validates what i already know.. : i have lots to learn about editorial fashion photography.

it is much different from the senior genre.

as to the model looking bored.. i didn't want her to smile.. because most editorial there isn't smiling..

there is lots of training ahead for kathryn, she is only like 15 years old and hasn't had any practice and had been infront of a pro camera only twice . i have already given her home work..

as for me, i have home work too.. need to learn this genre this year..

editorial isn't easy, especially when it is 29 degrees..ha ha..

happy holidays to all !

@ Misha.. so what is the weather like in Russia right now? and is the food good there?

IMHO, the problem is not a lack of smile, but a lack of expression. She seems wooden or bored.

I smile would have been nice... any sort of smile. Seems like she didn't want to be out in the cold on Christmas night.
