I have a 5d mark 2, and premiere pro cs4. What do I use to make the .mov files work. Do I seriously need to buy ANOTHER program just to make it work? And i've spent the past hour looking through forums for an answer...

any suggestions? Thanks!

I think you need Quicktime Pro (paid) for .mov Could be wrong though.

Doesn't the Canon supplied disc come with software though? My Canon HD video camera came with everything needed.

I'm not an expert, but in case you haven't tried this, it might at least let you see what you need.
VLC player is a really good little FREE player that plays all kinds of formats, it's worth a shot, I use it all of the time to watch my hi-def (AVCHD) movies from my Canon HFS 100.
You can get some 'serration' in the video at some resolutions, but it's still a pretty good player, especially for free.

The player isn't the problem.... I just want to edit the files but prem. pro won't open the file. I'm going to buy neo scene I guess...I was just hoping there was a free way to do it without losing quality

No, it's my fault, I reread what I wrote and I can see why you thought that. It was late and I was super tired. Lol!

One solution:

Use http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ (external link)
to convert from .mov to .avi or whatever format you need. It's free.

Now...why the hell did Canon choose to use .mov? That's my question.

I don't think this issue is ".mov", but rather the use of H.264 encoding. Also, what would you have preferred, Motion JPEG?

Video is still a dark art, and any format that Canon used there would be issues with.

AVCHD seems a better choice, it's pretty much universally supported by most editing software. That's what Canon use in their HD video cameras.

...but Canon does not use 1080p on their camcorders using the format. IIRC, they record in 1080i and combine it to make a pseudo- 1080p.

They record at 1920x1080 in either 50i or 25p (European PAL models anyway not sure about NTSC models).

Download MPEG Streamclip (external link) and convert the video to a container/codec that Premier can handle. This probably includes DV.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

This encapsulates my current understanding on the issue. From what I've read and seen is that the progressive is mix of interlaced frames and you need to do extra processing to get it to show progressive.

however, things may have changed.

I think what you are referring to is the way you can encapsulate 25p (progressive) capture into a 50i (interlaced) output. That's how most AVCHD cameras including my Canon HF-20 work but it's only for output via the onboard HDMI and component to ensure compatibility with TVs that only do 1080i. If you copy the files to a PC as I do then they are full HD 1080 at 25 frames per second progressive which can then be burned to Blu-Ray and output at 1080p on an appropriate TV.

If you want Premiere Pro to open .mov, you don't need to do anything, it already does. If you installed quicktime after premiere pro it may have screwed up some preferences, but other than that you should have no issues. If you want to edit 5dmkii files without skipping, you have three choices:
1) Convert the file to an Intra-frame codec (cineform, prores, mjpeg, certain forms of mpeg 1 and 2) or a h264 file without b frames. I personally say stick to non-commercial products like megui, but believe it or not you can also just use premiere pro to export the video as an intra codec, and might just be the easiest way to do it.
2) Get a GPU decoder that works with Premiere Pro
3) Get the 4.2 update, and a geforce gtx285/295 graphics card, or certain quadro fx cards (4800, 5600, and a few others). Premiere Pro has built in GPU decoding for those cards only.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.
