i will tell you this. if you are going to get a 5d II, then don't even bother trying out a 1D series camera. Once you see what canon's AF system is capable of and aren't using it, you will be highly disappointed.

+1 - but i think the Op wants a 1 series so I say get 2 x 1dsmk2... thing is that no a lot of people have had access to the Ds series and as such they have never been talked alot when it comes to high iso - there is no way that mk3 or 2 will dissapoint a 5d or 5d2 user.

Compared to the Mark III the "s" is far behind in ISO ability from my continued experience. Of course thats my opinion. I spend A LOT of time at 1600, 3200 and 6400 with the 1D. I tend to avoid the 's' when anything higher than 800 is need due to my results. Not that it cant or it is horrible just no match with the 1D.

I had both , 1dsmk3 handles ISO better then 5dmk1 , plus you will get faster speed , and much better auto focus , great camera go for it, I sold my 5d after i got 1ds , love 5d but it was useless next to 1dsmk3.

Any Disadvantages? Just one, weight. Other then that it's a fantastic piece of machinery. But it's the price of having the build quality.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but not so long time ago i had shots with my 1DsIII at ISO 3200, is it bad? yes, it is very bad, but i don't care

If thats ISO 3200 without NR, I think I'll go for the 1Ds III.

I have used both the 1D mk III and the 1Ds mk III before and the weight and bulk is the only thing holding me back... But if I keep my 5D1 for family stuff or a light, portable kit, I shold be covered.

Next topic: Affording the 1Ds mk III...

Invest heavily in the lottery...or sell some organs. As far as the weight thing goes, the images it produces will make you forget about how heavy it is.

I shot a wedding with my 5D and a 1D mk III - I have not forgotten about the weight, but the handling and responsiveness was impressive.

Gonna start shooting more, doing more family shoots, snotty kids, corporate headshots etc. In short, sell my soul for the 1Ds mk III.

i own both too and i'd say the 1d is maybe a half stop better. the 1d is excellent @ iso 1600 and the 1ds is very good.

Perfect. I like shooting ISO 1600 just for the noise sometimes... 5D noise looks great in b/w imho. Like this one, shot by the missus.

put a grip on the 5d II with batteries and they weigh about the same, and i prefer a gripped camera.

@ iso 1600 with the 5d, 1d or 1ds i almost never use any noise reduction and when i do it's usually because i blew the exposure.
