put a grip on the 5d II with batteries and they weigh about the same, and i prefer a gripped camera.

ed rader

I don't. IMHO, the 5D sans grip is the perfectly sized camera, but I lust for the AF of the 1-series. If my 50L could be mounted on a Nikon D700, this thread would never have existed.

I'm 6'4" and 207 pounds, so it's not like I have small girly hands. Just like the 5D size better :)

ISO 1600 is pushing it on the 1Ds III IMO... ISO 800 is the highest I consider usable

my very first outting with the 1ds....these are @ iso 1600 with no noise reduction.....

I shot a wedding with my 5D and a 1D mk III - I have not forgotten about the weight, but the handling and responsiveness was impressive.

Gonna start shooting more, doing more family shoots, snotty kids, corporate headshots etc. In short, sell my soul for the 1Ds mk III.

If it helps at all, I went to B&H yesterday and picked up a black rapid R7 strap for my 1D3. It with the 70-200 2.8 IS around my shoulder was fine weight wise. I walked NYC all day with Crumpler over one shoulder and camera/lens over the other. Weight wasn't an issue at all

In fact i like the ISO 3200 from my 1DsIII, as long i shoot RAW i can do a lot, and as you can see from the shots i posted above, no NR applied and it is still usable, so what if i apply NR? i even can push the exposure 1 stop over and still good enough, just people use ISO 3200 without adjust for the SS and Aperture and get underexposed shots which will definitely show more noise.

And ISO 1600 is better if those ISO3200 are good enough, so really i don't see that it will be Day&Night different in high ISO with 1DIII and 5D2, and i still will say that 1Ds will retain the best details in shadows or even highlight than 5D2.

I don't own this body (1Ds mk3), but had the chance to fire off 400+ frames with one yesterday. I was absolutely blown away. I knew the resolution would be good but wow...

Every aspect of this body is leaps and bounds ahead of the pro-sumer stuff I've been using. I'm now starting to think Canon is sandbagging with their 40 & 50Ds. I've always had all sorts of issues with those bodies that I just chalked up to user error. The second I picked up the 1Ds mk3 all those issues went away. AF never grabbed the background when focus lock should have held, no weird color casts with mixed lighting, e-ttl worked flawlessly all night (both my 40 and 50 have MAJOR intermittent overexposure with e-ttl), etc... This is on top of the outstanding color and tone quality, resolution, and lighting fast AF you'd expect. 50D is a toy compared to this thing!

I told the owner of the body I'd have to quit the business if I couldn't keep using it... :)

I have (2) 5D's and (1) 1Ds Mark III. The 1Ds Mark III is a better camera in every aspect than the 5D's but there is something special about the 5D's as well. When going for an important shot or in low light I will always grab the 1Ds Mark III.

Having said that, I am thinking about selling mine to get the 1D Mark IV as I would like to have a mix of full frame and 1.3 crop.

I would not hesitate in recommending the 1Ds Mark III, you will love it.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have a local oppurtunity to pickup a 1DsII and am thinking of selling my 50D to get into FF. My concerns are losing the bells & whistles like live view, micro focus adjust and the higher ISO capability. Do any of you have experience with the 1DsII body and how it would compare to the 5D or 5DII?

There are disadvantages to every camera. It's a matter of finding which camera is most advantageous to you.

Watch the 1Ds3...

...(on the left) performing against the D3x (on the right), and both images juiced-up with the exact same technology/process (verbatim, identical), PIX-style.

Controlled studio RAW images courtesy of Imaging Resource, which you can all download and work on your own.

Notice how the 1Ds3 more than matches the D3x, with less pixels, absolutely exhuberant detail, as well as abundant micro-contrast in every single area of high-frequency concentration, at ISO100 (images' detail processed to the fullest possible extent, with nothing else left on them to give, and for print/press rendering purposes):

The 1Ds3 is truly special in my list (I have been many times tempted to buy it), and its LR/ACR conversions provide gobs of "inter-pixel" micro-contrast, which you grow to appreciate as soon as you boost detail conserved in its images.

It actually does superb ISo3200, and could easily handle ISo6400, based on the results I have extracted at ISo3200 in my bench, from this cam.

Enjoy,

PIX

So I guess my rather odd question is: Are there any weak points with the 1Ds mk III? Any chinks in the armor? Have been eyeing the D700 but they don't come with EF mount, do they?

ISO would be the main 1 from my 2 years of experence. I feel my 5D preformed better.
I dont go over 800 ISO, mind you dont shoot a lot of low light stuff
