Most do start in TV for some reason I noticed - I was told to when starting but the guy I "learned" from was a complete idiot. Though it's "M" all the way and "AV" when conditions are changing rapidly :)

I haven't looked at it in a long time but I believe camera manuals kind of tell people to use Tv for action..causing all of the questions when it doesn't work out that well.

Lots of good points on here already. I'd add to describe the different kind of shots you can get in a sporting event:

e.g. come early, get folks coming, fans getting into it, vendors setting up, players warming up, etc.

Game shots: action of course, player reactions and celebrations, players watching on the sidelines, fan reactions, coaches discussing, referees officiating, cheerleaders cheering etc.

How to prepare for and anticipate action from these different actors at the game.

I knew I didn't read those things for a reason!

I got my 50D manual out to read the paragrah on Tv in the 50D (and I'm sure other Canon EOS manuals)--

Tv: Shutter-Priority AE in this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture to obtain the correct exposure matching the brightness of the subject. This is called shutter-priority AE. A faster shutter speed can freeze the action or moving subject. Or a slower shutter speed can create a blurred effect, giving the impression of motion.

That phrase alone "a faster shutter speed can freeze the action or moving subject" seems to be telling people who come here asking and stating "I shot in Tv mode" that it's the right mode to shoot in. I think Tv can be worse than "running man" as some people call sports mode, not that 'running man' works very well. I actually played with an aunts p&s this Christmas for a few minutes..bought her it Christmas last year and she's finally getting around to learning how to use it after a lifetime of 35mm film cameras.

The Av mode paragraph never once mentions larger aperture number will produce darker photos even if it does manage to stop the action, but its' still a better mode for people starting out.. They show an inanimate chess board for the Av yet people will succeed a heck of a lot more in Av than Tv... You never see people answer 'shoot in Tv' when people ask for sports shooting help.. the usual answer is shoot in Av and use the smallest number your lens allows.

Please make sure to mention how "Giving" away photos and or working for access is effecting the entire professional industry and putting us all out of business. Everything else mentioned is great. Good luck. I'm doing a workshop for Calumet in San Diego coming this Spring and I'm looking forward to it.
