Is the Nifty Fifty the 1.4 or the 1.8?

I thought it was the 1.4

The f/1.4 started out as the Nifty Fifty and the 1.8 II was the Thrifty Fifty. BUT, as you can see, by popular usage the 1.8 II is now the Nifty fifty.

I don't think that is true. I believe the 50mm 1.8 Mk II was called the "Nifty Fifty" long before the 50mm 1.4 was released in 1993.

In fact the term "Nifty Fifty" probably predates the 1990 50mm 1.8 Mk II or even the 1987 50mm 1.8 Mk I.

Lol, Mike, i guess they don't (although if you dig a little deeper, the list on dpr originated on POTN :) ). I absolutely agree with you that the term nifty fifty most likely predates the original 1.8 and that most people agree that the 1.8 II is the nifty fifty.

Btw, I coined the term Magic Mole ;) .

Also, Mike, from that same thread you quoted:

+1. For some unknown reason, the moniker "Nifty Fifty" got kidnapped by the f1.8 crowd.

I've always heard the 50 1.8 referred to as the "Thrifty" and the 1.4 as the "Nifty"

In2Photos wrote in post #6371465 (external link)
the 50 1.8 will be known as the Thrifty Fifty and the 1.4 as the Nifty. I know this is hit or miss but it makes sense.

I still think that popular usage rules the day here...

I had a look at that thread again, and lots of posters say they consider the 50mm 1.8 to be the Nifty so you can't really be sure I suppose.

The 50 f/1.8's called "Nifty" because it represents real value for money. Better to leave the 50 f/1.4 un-named. May I refer you to this thread?

Well going by these two polls,

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=801162

https://photography-on-the.net …4720&highlight=poll+nifty

it is pretty obvious that POTN members consider the 50mm 1.8 to be the true "Nifty Fifty"

Sigzilla... that has got to be the best name ever... lol. Now I need to make it a life goal to get one. Too bad by the time I can justify it, I will most likely be too old to effectively move it by myself =P

OP> I have always thought the 1.8 was the nifty.

I swear the AF in that lens was set to self-destruct mode. Focus on something closer than 1.5 feet away and the motor would just about grind the teeth as it slammed the front element out of the lens several times before the camera told it to begin searching. Glad I got rid of it when I did - ticking time bomb :)

Now I have his big brother, and I love him <3
