BUT, as you can see, by popular usage the 1.8 II is now the Nifty fifty. I don't think that is true. I believe the 50mm 1.8 Mk II was called the "Nifty Fifty" long before the 50mm 1.4 was released in 1993. For some unknown reason, the moniker "Nifty Fifty" got kidnapped by the f1.8 crowd. FlyingPhotog wrote in post #7881736 I've always heard the 50 1.8 referred to as the "Thrifty" and the 1.4 as the "Nifty" In2Photos wrote in post #6371465 the 50 1.8 will be known as the Thrifty Fifty and the 1.4 as the Nifty. I know this is hit or miss but it makes sense. I still think that popular usage rules the day here... xgender.net

msowsun "approx 8mm" More info | Dec 26, 2009 18:50 | #9 I had a look at that thread again, and lots of posters say they consider the 50mm 1.8 to be the Nifty so you can't really be sure I suppose. Focus on something closer than 1.5 feet away and the motor would just about grind the teeth as it slammed the front element out of the lens several times before the camera told it to begin searching. Glad I got rid of it when I did - ticking time bomb Canon EOS 1D III
