Warning: be sure that the Av mode without flash is not setting a shutter speed faster than the camera's sync speed because when the flash is activated the shutter speed will be automatically reduced to the sync speed and the shot will be overexposed. How do you make the flash fire for fill light in daylight? I have an xti and a 420ex... I don't shoot it automatic mode, usually "M" or "AV". Please forgive the ignorance, but I'm trying desperately to learn the "little" things. The site escapes me now, but the premise of the article was to, (as others have suggested) set up your camera to expose properly for the existing conditions. Then dial in anywhere from -1/3 to -1 1/3 stops of flash compensation to get a more natural look. Just experiment a little, it's not like you're going to waste film. You can only fish for so long before you gotta throw a stick of dynamite in the water.

It doesn't have a focal plane shutter. Synch speed on a shutterless camera is typically equal to the duration of a 1:1 flash pulse (plus a little margin). I'd expect 1/500. You can always use Tv mode at or below the sync speed- that will help with your shots not being overexposed at too wide an aperture. Twitter
