I know this is probably such a "newbie" (stupid) question, but... it's one I need an answer to...

How do you make the flash fire for fill light in daylight? I have an xti and a 420ex... I don't shoot it automatic mode, usually "M" or "AV".

Please forgive the ignorance, but I'm trying desperately to learn the "little" things.

Blessings,
Marjohn

AV + flash is "fill light" , Av determines primary exposure and flash is added on. Warning: be sure that the Av mode without flash is not setting a shutter speed faster than the camera's sync speed because when the flash is activated the shutter speed will be automatically reduced to the sync speed and the shot will be overexposed. To get the speed down to a safe level close down aperture or reduce ISO.

You pick settings in M mode that have a shutter speed at or below the synch speed of the camera (1/250 or so) and which properly expose for ambient light. Then turn the flash on. That's it.

Will the sync speed be as high as 1/250 on an XTi? It isn't that high on my Canon.

200 on the XT, 250 on the 40D.

I don't understand why there is any sync speed on the G2. It doesn't have a focal plane shutter.

Some time ago someone posted a link, to an article about this, on these boards. The site escapes me now, but the premise of the article was to, (as others have suggested) set up your camera to expose properly for the existing conditions. Then dial in anywhere from -1/3 to -1 1/3 stops of flash compensation to get a more natural look. Just experiment a little, it's not like you're going to waste film.

Synch speed on a shutterless camera is typically equal to the duration of a 1:1 flash pulse (plus a little margin). I'd expect 1/500.

You can always use Tv mode at or below the sync speed- that will help with your shots not being overexposed at too wide an aperture.

One of my custom functions (c1) is ISO 400, shutter speed 1/250, flash exposure compensation at -1 1/2 stops in case i need a quick blast of fill flash.
