Holy crap, that is just awesome!

My own most amazing experience...I dunno. Nothing I've done compares to what that guy experienced, but I guess it would have to be last Spring in Yellowstone. I was parked near Canyon Junction waiting for the Canyon pack to cross the road early in the morning. I saw another photographer and asked him if he'd seen them and he said he'd seen one further down the road but it was gone. I was about to give up when I saw this one walking through the woods about ten yards from me. When she threw back her head and started howling right next to me, the hair on the back of my neck stood up...

One of my most memorable experiences as a photographer happened about a year and a half ago. My wife and I went to South Africa on safari. On one of our game drives we came across a mother and father elephant with their baby, and we ended up getting charged by the mother elephant. These pictures were taken with a 17-40mm lens. Here is a link to the full series.

Great shots hiker. I'm headed to Africa for 3 weeks in May, trying to figure out what glass to take. A fledgling photographer, I'm upgrading my 10D to either a 40 or 50D. I have a L 28-70 f2.8 and an L 70-200 f4 right now, and am trying to decide of what to buy for longer glass. Was thinking about either a prime L 400 5.6 as I understand it is a great bird lens (another "fledgling" interest of mine) or a zoom, maybe the L 100-400.

Any thoughts?

Can't compare with the leopard seal but for me the most amazing was a couple of years back in the Linyanti in Botswana.

In order to track some wild dogs we had seen the evening before, we had set out extremely early one morning to see if we could catch them in the middle of a hunt. Unfortunately by the time we found them they had already made a kill, and were mobile through heavy bush. My guide had a good idea where they were heading so we set off to try and intercept them. As we came around a bend, instead of the dogs, we espied three lionesses in the long grass across a spillway (a seasonal river that occurs after the rainy season).

The leading cat appeared to be heading for the water so we raced to be just across the bank from her should she choose to come down for some refreshment. To our surprise and immense delight she wanted no drink but to cross. Her two sisters followed a couple of minutes later, all emerging just meters behind our vehicle before running friskily into he bush.

To complete the morning, moments later one of the wild dogs we lost track of earlier, sped by in hot but inevitably fruitless pursuit of an impala (Aepyceros melampus), an antelope amongst the favourite prey of all carnivores in the African bush.

Here is the best shot I got that day handholding my 600 (and full frame)

Sometimes you just get very very lucky
