The lioness shot is amazing...she looks mad. The reflection of her in the water is almost better than the actual photo of her.

I still remember how difficult it was...just to focus! My guide driver spotted this lioness hiding-stalking a zebra herd somewhere in Tarangire national park (Tanzania)...it took me several minutes to really understand where exactly she was....but my effort finally proved fruitful!
This shot was awarded an "honorable mention" at this year's National Wildlife Federation (NWF) annual photo contest which means that it was selected as one of the winning shots from a total of 70.000 entries. It was also published in National Wildlife Federation's magazine (December-January 2010 issue)....and is one of the top selling photos in my wildlife portfolio!

Matman, that is one of the most amazing photos I have ever seen!! Well deserved recognition.

I'm headed to Africa in May, hope to have some great photo ops while there.

my most amazing experience was when staying in Borneo, in a lodge 90 miles down a dirt track in the middle of the rainforest. At about 3pm on the second day, an orangutan just came into the river clearing from the forest. It spent about 3 hours eating from a tree in the middle of the lodge, then nested in it for the night. We then all returned the next morning to watch it get up and move on. The guides at the lodge said that in the 15 years it had been open this was only about the third time that had happened.

I couldn't believe my luck- most people (myself included) who go to Borneo are happy if they just get a glimpse of a wild orangutan, let alone anything like this.

Can't compare with the leopard seal but for me the most amazing was a couple of years back in the Linyanti in Botswana.

In order to track some wild dogs we had seen the evening before, we had set out extremely early one morning to see if we could catch them in the middle of a hunt. Unfortunately by the time we found them they had already made a kill, and were mobile through heavy bush. My guide had a good idea where they were heading so we set off to try and intercept them. As we came around a bend, instead of the dogs, we espied three lionesses in the long grass across a spillway (a seasonal river that occurs after the rainy season).

The leading cat appeared to be heading for the water so we raced to be just across the bank from her should she choose to come down for some refreshment. To our surprise and immense delight she wanted no drink but to cross. Her two sisters followed a couple of minutes later, all emerging just meters behind our vehicle before running friskily into he bush.

To complete the morning, moments later one of the wild dogs we lost track of earlier, sped by in hot but inevitably fruitless pursuit of an impala (Aepyceros melampus), an antelope amongst the favourite prey of all carnivores in the African bush.

Here is the best shot I got that day handholding my 600 (and full frame)

Sometimes you just get very very lucky

Wow, amazing.

My daughter and I went there to photograph the work at an orphanage a friend runs. So we did get to go and see the kids at both orphanages. Thankfully they were all ok. Other than that, spent the day after the quake trying to get info on what, when Americans were being evacuated, and then drove around and tried to take in the destruction. We got out the next morning, the 14th. Had a pilot offer to fly us to the Dominican for $400 a person.

The devestation is unreal. And to know that Haiti was already the poorest country in the western hemisphere with malnutrition a leading cause of death in children. That many,70+%, live on less than $1 a day. And now this. It breaks my heart to remember the many injured living on the streets becuse they had nowhere else to go and no idea where their next meal was coming from.
