Another raw conversion challenge

It seems these challenges are popular so I'll contribute with one myself.

Can anybody make a better photo out of the raw than my own version? (This is a written permission )

Yacine, I put up this photo for editing so its completely ok. The endresult is fantastic.

Can You tell me what you did in the first version?

2 differents conversions with C1, both with the Canon 1Ds MK II profile instead of 20D profile. I have noticed that sometimes I obtain better colours with a non dedicated profile, even if the colours may not always accurate.

for the first conversion (the bird) i used high contrast profile and for the second (woman) high shadows
then I merged both pics using masks in photoshop and adjusting again levels and sharpness.

For the woman I prefer the conversion made by PacAce. Can you tell us how you did ?

btw how did You create the new background (I mean the actual background not how to insert it ), I think that looks great with this Hawk.

just create a new layer and fill it with black
then create an ellipse filled with brown (this also create a new layer)
merge the 2 layers
apply a gaussien blur with a high value (180 here)

It is interesting how people can mess with the original and come up with different, but good images.

Gladly, Yacine. Basically, all I did to the women was remove the distracting "shine" from the face. I removed the forehead shine by selecting an area around the shine large enough to more than cover the shine. I then moved that selection down to the part of the forehead with good color. I feathered the selection and copied that area and then pasted the copy over the shiny forehead area (this creates a new layer). I adjusted the opacity of the layer to make it more natural looking.

For the shinies on the other parts of the face, like the nose, I just duplicated the original image and then used the clone tool set to 30% opacity to paint out the shine. I made as many passes as necessary to get the right amount of color. Since this will essential destroy any detail in the areas you've clone over, I adjusted the opacity of this layer so that some of the original detail is still visible from underneath.

instead of using the clone tool above, you can also just use a paint brush (opacity set to 30%) and brush in the appropriate color. You will need to select the right color by using the color picker eye dropper and clicking it over the area near where you are going to paint over so that the colors match as much as possible.
