Looking through the B&H used department i stumbled on this monster. Do u guys think its really worth that kind of money (120,000), or do u think its that much cause its rare?

Thank God it is compatible w/ 1.4 and 2x extenders for that extra reach! I wonder how many of these were made - and how much demand there was at the time - is the price based on very limited production numbers (rarity) or the cost of producing the beast?

This is such a huge lens it is only good for very long distances and $120k can secure a plethora of the best glass available.

Probably expensive to make and rare. Weren't at least some of these made in FD mounts and then retooled into EF mount lenses by Canon? Seems like I heard that somewhere.

EDIT: I knew I had heard that somewhere... it was that link! lol

Oh, and B&H has a video review on their site for this lens, if you're interested.

I'm thinking I wouldn't buy that even if I had a million dollars to blow. I dunno, I guess I would have to win the lottery and find out.

If I had the money I'd buy the thing so we wouldn't have to go through these endless threads about it. It pops up once or twice a week...

I can't think of anything I would use it for, so, no.

I think the price reflects the rarety of this lens. I cant imagine this thing costing canon anything near its price tag to produce. Im sorry.

I also think everything photographic in general is soooooo overpriced.

For example the 50D is $900 bucks, while the 5D mark-2 is $2700 dollars. Are you gonna tell me that a full sensor vs a crop costs them almost 2K more??? Bull!!!!!!

Yeah, the price of that lens is surreal. AFAIK that was not a regular production lens, a custom made one and only a few were ever made.
However, it's all supply and demand. If people consider the 5DII way too expensive, they won't buy it. It's not only photography where near the top you have to pay a big premium for a relatively small amount of improvement.
Take guitars for example. Why is a John Suhr strat $2500 where you can play the same song the same way(?) on a $1000 USA std strat or a $100 cheap strat. This is a common phenomenon i think.

It's not just the price. It's the size and the weight and the impractability of such a long, non-IS lens for getting good photos.

This thing is really only good for a few things, and then the support system and technique needed would be really demanding.
