This kid has lashes most girls would love to have...all the boys in our family have beautiful lashes. I loved his little smile and eyes in this one even though there was no eye contact with the camera. Think it works w/o eye contact? Shot with my S5 and 430 ex for fill.

I looked at this post earlier and wasn't sure what to say so I waited a little bit. I wanted to offer an explanation of why it didn't work for me. The eye contact was only part of why.

When I look at your shot I struggle to find something to focus on and the lines and angle in the subject don't follow any patterns so my eyes jump around. I would have cropped closer on the right side and eliminated some of the negative space if I had taken the shot. His cheeks are bright and don't pop away from the background enough for me on the right side.

If I am emotionally attached to the subject it makes it tougher to look at photos objectively. Not just the emotions, but I can see subtle expressions in my kids faces that most other people don't recognize. This shot reminded me of many I have printed out of my kids.

If you like it who cares what we think :)

I don't mind images without eye contact... His smile is so cute and he seems very involved in what he is doing... Only thing I'd say is that my eyes are drawn to the bottom of the frame to see what he's lookign at... but it's cropped out..... So, in a shot like this one.. maybe more negative space in the direction that the subject is looking at...? To complete the story..

Is is a bug, a butterfly.. a feather.. what has captured him so intentely and made him smile like that...?

Your B&W looks nice and I like the softness of the lighting too. :)
