What's the best Tripod for my T1i, 24-105, and a Flash?

I mostly shoot family events and my daughter's sporting activities.

For those types of things perhaps a monopod would be better?

I would suggest my setup then, Manfrotto 055XPROB legs and a 488RC2 head. It's a little heavy but it's not a problem unless you take it hiking. Comes in well under your $500 budget, unless you are looking for something fancier :)

The best? Gitzo with an RRS or Markins head. But youre not gonna get that with a $500 budget. The bogen/manfrotto setup most will recommend is much less than $500 and more than enough for most.

I'll check out the Bogen! I sure hate that Bogen Avenger stand. Use that at work all the time!
