Any ideas on how to not use ETTL with the ST-E2 and my Metz?

I'm a little stuck so hoped someone could point out the obvious :)

I trigger my Metz 58 AF (slave) from my ST-E2 (master) and it's good. The problem is that I want to not use ETTL and set the flash output manually and just trigger the flash. I've been unable to get this to happen so wonder what I'm doing wrong???

I have ordered a set of wireless (radio) triggers that should be here in a day or two so maybe they will work like this but I was hoping to use the ST-E2 for some work too.

Thanks if you have any ideas :)

Mike

You should be able to just set the Metz 58 AF-1c to manual slave mode and then trigger it with the ST-E2. The group the slave is set to shouldn't matter but set it to Group A just to be safe. Of course, you'll need to set the power level on the flash itself since you won't be able to do it via the ST-E2.

I thought that I'd set that right but will double check I'm getting this right. Thanks for the help :)

Oops! My sincerest apology for the previous misinformation. I had forgotten that the Metz, in slave mode, does not allow you to set the flash to manual mode like you can with the Canon slave flashes. So, that means that the power level of the Metz slave needs to be set on the master set to manual mode. This will work with a master flash but it won't with the ST-E2 because the ST-E2 cannot control slaves in manual mode.

Again, my apology. :o

Ah ha! Brilliant information! Thanks :)

No need for any apology BTW.

Just a thought. I am about to get a second flash. Maybe I should get a Canon unit to be triggered by the ST-E2 and then the Metz will be triggered by that?

Just to follow on from this, once my radio triggers arrive my guess is that they will be fired in manual (if I set that) so that will hopefully solve my problem?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks again for your help :)

If you get the 580EX flash, or even another Metz 58 AF-1c, you'll be able to trigger the slave Metz with it. However, you will not be able to trigger the 580EX with the ST-E2 and then have the 580EX turn around and trigger the Metz.

Yes, if you get a radio trigger, you'll be able to trigger the Metz in manual mode.

Just as an FYI, if your Metz is at a firmware level lower than v2, you'll need to update your firmware before you can use the Metz off camera.

Don't apologize for asking questions. That's one of the things this forum is for. :)
