Nice photo, Erik_L. I've never seen smoke from stacks done in long exposure.

f/4 to f/8 would be TWO full stops, which reduces the light by half each time. So, to keep the same exposure as f/4 and 300s, the settings should have been f/8 and 1200s... If I remember my math correctly :|

Also, 300sec is an AWFUL long time; how low was the light for this shot?

Ha-ha, I give up. I was too tired to see the error myself, when I responded.

5.6^2/4^2 = 2. That's why it doubles (or halves) by each f-stop.

I let my light meter tell me what's what. Never did a pic that was longer than 25 seconds or so:

If you let the light meter (I assume you're talking about the one in the camera) tell you what's what, then you'll never be doings pics longer than 30 seconds because that's the limit of the built-in metering (to date). :p

Sorry but you got the equation wrong. It's E=mc² ("E" equals "m" "c" squared) :p :mrgreen:

OK, so I should have written that 5.6²/4²=2, then.
It takes you know how to write superscripts!

But you did it right the first time, though. But E=mc2 is not the same as E=mc^2. ;)

Besides, it was just a joke. A tongue-in-cheek. Did you note the two emoticons I used previously? :lol:

Actually, 5.6^2/4^2 = 1.96... != 2. :p

And how do you write superscripts?

On a PC, use the Numeric Keypad and type [ALT] 0178 to get ², [ALT]0179 for ³.

Reciprocity failure...a phenomenon associated with film, when extremely long exposures do not double the amount of light recorded by the film when the length of time is doubled, but requires a greater increase of time to compensate for the non-linear exposure response of the emulsion. 1/8 sec. f/22 is not the same as 16 sec. f/2 because film might need 28 sec. f/2 to compensate for reciprocity failure.

(Also pertains to extremely short times to, like 1/64000 f/2 is not like 1/2000 f/11, like you would assume it would be with a -5EV change of aperture and +5EV change of shutter speed.)

Actually, it would be equal to 2 if the exact value of f/5.6 (i.e. 5.65685424949238 ) were used in the equation. The 1.96 is the result of rounding. ;)
