On a PC, use the Numeric Keypad and type [ALT] 0178 to get ², [ALT]0179 for ³.

I'm on a Mac. :(

Google didn't give me anything immediately, which is why I asked, but maybe I missed something.

Go into System Preferences and click on "Language & Text".
Select the "Input Sources" tab at the top of the window and make sure "Keyboard & Character Viewer" and "Show Input menu in menu bar" are checked.

Close System Preferences.
Go to the menu bar and click on the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar.
Select "Show Keyboard Character Viewer" from the popup menu.

In the Character viewer window, expand the Symbols tree in the upper left panel of the window. Scroll down the branches to "Numbers and Number Symbols" and select it.

Scroll down through the characters in the right panel until you get to the part showing the superscripted numbers. Select the number you want and then click on the "Insert" button at the bottom of the window.

Actually, 5.6^2/4^2 = 1.96... != 2. :p

Right. It should be (sqrt(2)^5)^2/(sqrt(2)^4)^2 = 2

Actually, it would be equal to 2 if the exact value of f/5.6 (i.e. 5.65685424949238 ) were used in the equation. The 1.96 is the result of rounding.

As I'm sure you know, if it were rounded, it would be 5.7, not 5.6. ;) I think the powers that be (early photographers?) went with truncating to 5.6 because it worked better with other rounded numbers (e.g. 2.8 * 2 = 5.6).

Er, I knew this route; I was hoping for a keyboard shortcut. I gotta admit -- those Windows Alt+number things are handy. They're possible (accents, for instance) in Mac, but I just find the Windows way a little easier. One of the things easier in Windows.

Bah. I was just giving him a hard time. :)

I'm wondering if this thread will turn into an LightRules-esque thread.
