I recently traded for a decent condition 1D MK. II with around 33,000 actuations on it. It works beautifully as far as focusing, speed, and all the other goodies compared to an xxD body. The problem lies with ( I Think ) the shutter. when in continuous shooting mode it will only record the first image of series, ( This is how it was when I got it. I got it with only a DC Coupler, I don't even know if it's the right supply for the alternate battery thing that makes this possible).
Next, after buying a battery and charger, charging the battery and then running it through a condition cycle, I took the body on a walk out in the cold. Now it seems as though it will only take a picture with a slow shutter speed, ie; below 1/60 of a second. If I take a few it might go as far as 1/80 second. It also seems to work better if I'm holding the * button (CF-N x-X applied) in AI-Servo mode and then snap the shutter.

I'm on a limited budget, I want to send the camera body to Canon in N.J. , but I can't see the possibility of paying a large bill for a shutter replacement, or possibly worse. I find it strange that it works better when holding the auto-focus button, as though it's "Charging the sensor, or sending power somewhere it needs to go" , as opposed to just a shutter replacement.

Does anybody have any idea what Canon charges for the following;

1. Shutter Replacement
2. Main PCB replacement
3. Shutter release replacement

Those are the only three thngs that come to mind, but if you've experienced similar symptoms and have had service that wasn't covered underwaranty please chime in as well.

I hate to just unload the camera and play dumb, I think it's just wrong, but I am weary of the repair bill.

Didn't you check these things before you bought it? 33k actuations means pretty good camera.

I would reset all the custom as well as personal functions and start from there.

BTW - Typical cost for canon repair service is around $200.

$ 200 ?, If that's the average then it's in the mail. Yes I checked it out. Clean unit focused at least 10 times faster than my 40D with a Sigma 24-70 and when got it home probably 50 times faster with 400 f5.6L. Like I said really clean, everything works well. I had some doubts when I checked it out, but put them aside because I was thinking it may have been a limitation of the DC Coupler. This is my first "pro" series body and I was WIKKID Freakin' EXCITED. Now (as always) looking back I could have got a better deal, but I guess I'll bite the bullet and send it in and hope for the best.

Thx. for replying.

Shutter replacement on my 5D was around $180.
Shutter release assembly (whole top of the camera got replaced) on an old 40D was also around $180.

They are pretty much flat price rate which includes parts and labor. If they find that the damage is more severe than the original estimate, they will let you know before proceeding. They will not do the work unless you authorize it, so don't worry about getting a bill for $500 that you weren't expecting.

It SOUNDS like your camera is stuck in AE Lock mode. When you look through the viewfinder; do you see an * ?

50D manual wrote:
="50D manual"]
Use AE lock when the area of focus is to be different from the exposure
metering area or when you want to take multiple shots at the same exposure
setting. Press the <*> button to lock the exposure, then recompose and take
the shot. This is called AE lock. It is effective for backlit subjects.
1 Focus the subject.
􀀠 Press the shutter button halfway.
􀁘 The exposure setting will be
displayed.
2 Press the <*> button. (0)
􀁘 The <*> icon lights in the viewfinder
to indicate that the exposure setting is
locked (AE lock).
􀀠 Each time you press the <*> button,
it locks the current auto exposure
setting.
3 Recompose and take the picture.
􀀠 If you want to maintain the AE lock
while taking more shots, hold down
the <*> button and press the shutter
button to take another shot.

No, I wish that was the problem. It will go in and out of AE mode, switch to manual and function in all the modes unless they ask it to use a high shutter speed.

Just an update,
I took the Mk. II out this weekend and it functioned great. I was using AP mode shooting mostly Seagulls in flight. From river bank to bright sky the shutter speeds were all over the place but there was no cut-off frames and I'm Stoked!!

What's the odds that this camera was put in the closet and gummed up a bit from sitting? I kind of hope to be able to use it this warm season ad free it up some so it works during the winter.
