My 300D has given me excellent service over the last 5 years, and this morning it suddenly stopped recording images. I tried changing the battery and the CF card, to no avail. I guess I would be right to assume that it is time to lay it to rest?

Take it to a shop and see what they have to say. Could be any number of things. Unless you want it to be broken ofcourse :-)

Or if it turns on how about reloading the firmware?

It was a great camera, but given the minimum charge to repair cameras these days I would suggest putting that money toward an upgrade. I think you will enjoy some of the features and improvements in IQ even if you buy a used xti or 30d.

How many images has it taken? I hope mine don't give up ghost before I get my 7D!

Tom, there are no repair shops for any kind of camera in the Bahamas unfortunately. I'll try bigrob's suggestion, but I will admit that I have put the Rebel XS on my B&H wish list. I have a 350D, so at least I can get my daily shutter fix until I can solve the problem! Thanks for your replies.

Time to trade up to a 50D !!!!

I did this with my old 300D and got the 50D with the 28-135 IS lens for about $815 with tax and shipping.

Hmm, not sure you can do this from the Bahama's, but can't hurt to try.....

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

Since I do not have a bottomless wallet I'm looking at the Rebel XS (1000D). I'm also considering the T1i, but don't think I want to spend the extra to have video recording, since I most likely would hardly ever use it. I used the 300D almost as much as my 350D, really liked that camera even though it is a slow clunky old thing.

I do love my 350D, done me proud, specially for the price I paid.

I would suggest you skip the xs in favor of the xsi or even a used 40d. Although I dont remember the exact details when the xs came out it was essentially a dumbed down version of the xti with a few features missing. Totally designed to be a market entry camera, treat yourself to something nicer for little extra out of pocket.

I bought the XSi because my digital "passed away" this past summer and my wallet was tight, it's been a great little camera. All my co-workers and my boss's lenses all work with it too (they have the 50D and 40Ds). Great camera for small price

Thanks gonzo, looking at it on B&H's site there is very little difference in cost so I will definitely consider that. With free shipping within the US I can have it sent to a freight forwarder in Florida and they will ship it from there for only $35. Cameras are duty free here, so it looks like that would be well worth the $40 difference in cost at B&H.
