I've never had a lens repaired, and my wife's 17-85 EF-S is having focus issues. It seems to jump back and forth rapidly when trying to lock-on, and sometimes it fails to achieve focus.

So what does it cost to have a lens repaired that out of warranty? It hasn't been dropped and the optics look good. I don't think it's worth spending a lot of money on.

It really depends and looking at your gear list i would say .. dump it .. It might need a USM motor assy or the aperture problem that happends with this lens. PM me if you want to sell it though I do buy broken lenses and camera's

I had my 17-85 repaired in summer 2009. Did the entire transaction through the Canon website without ever needing to speak to a person. My lens was acting the exact same way. The autofocus motor had gone out on it. Cost me $110(includes shipping) to get it repaired. From the day I shipped it to return was 10 days. Canon will charge a standard $95(price in June '09) for repair and send you an actual estimate for final approval before they do any work but it will be at least $95. From what I remember, if you decide to not repair it, all of your money is returned and you are only out shipping costs.

I had this same problem a few months ago, but the next time I tried the lens, it worked properly, and has done so ever since. Nonetheless, I did get a repair estimate from Canon Irvine. It was about $120.
