Bought the R7 strap at B&H. Walked to central park. Sat down at the Central Park Zoo's cafe for a quick lunch and look at my 1D3 and think to myself "Where the hell is my eyepiece?"

So now I walk back down to B&H to buy another eyepiece and ask the guy that helped me with the Black Rapid strap "Considering I lost my eyepiece within an hour of using this strap, what do other folks do to secure their eyepieces?"

For the first time EVER in my experience at B&H, I started an employee war :). 2 guys said "Be more careful". Another guy then starts arguing on my behalf "No, he's right. Because the camera hangs upside down, the eyepiece is just held on by those cheap plastic hooks".

Eventually, the only recommendation that I got was to super glue the eyepiece on. That I don't really want to do, so I was wondering since a few folks here have Black Rapid straps, have you lost your eyepieces? What have you done to secure them? etc.

I've never understood why people want to hang their cameras upside down anyway. Canon fitted two perfectly usable attachment points to hang the camera right way up!

As far as I can see it also rules out using a tripod?

yep our eyepieces did come off a couple of times. Fortunately we found it. There isn't much you can do about it. I don't know about the new BR straps but be aware that the original ones had a tendency to work themselves loose from the camera (that was more of a concern for me).

The solution to preventing the loss of eyepieces is to make them fit tighter. The two little plastic hooks just aren't adequate for keeping them in place. I took my eyepieces off and laid a single layer of gaffers tape over the back of them. This tightened them up enough they won't fall off but can still be removed if necessary. I haven't lost one since and I use the Black Rapid straps ALL the time.

Yeah, I have to work at it to get mine off, but it's not an issue 'cause I have no reason to remove them. I wear glasses and I'd rather have the cushioning of the eyepiece.

TaDa, I use a clear nail polish to keep my eyepiece from falling off. I just brush a bit on the sides. This used to happen to me all the time until I found this solution. Never lost any eyepiece from that time on.

So just cut little pieces of gaffer's tape and put it on the back of the eyepiece? Like cover up where it says Canon and whatnot? Assume just one layer?

Jerome,

Where do you brush the nail polish on to? The sides of the eye piece or on to the sides of the camera's viewfinder where the hooks latch on to?

The side of the camera's viewfinder (that small canal where the eyepiece slides in) just put a small drop of the polish.

Yep. I put three small pieces on the back. One across the top and one down each side. I covered the entire back of the eye piece.

Most pros I know with 1Ds use Gaffers tape.

I also lost my eyecup... it sucks to loose 15 bucks! I'll tape the eyecup in my 7D as soon as I get it. I am not using any eyecup on the XSi now... it makes no difference, and the one I bought remains in the packaging for when I sell the camera.

Yet another reason not to use this strap. I lost two eye pieces - one from my 5D and one from my 40D before I wised up and dumped it.

Have a hot glue gun? Put a drop of hot glue on the track or each side clip of the eyepiece. Install and hold for 30 seconds until cool. The eyepiece will be more secure, but if you want to take it off you can, and you can completely clean off any hot glue even years down the road. It peels right off.
