Hey everyone, I know this question comes up alot but I need some help with quoting replacement prices for my gear. I have bought my 5D classic and 24-70 both used. Now for insurance purposes, is it best to put the price that I bought them for, or as they would be "new".

My problem is that the 5D is discontinued so its hard to put it as new when I cant even find a supplier who sells them new. It will be covered for all damage/stolen/lost. A family member is the insurance salesman but even he unsure of what to do about a discontinued item.

I am a bit lost, but I needed to make my own thread. I appreciate all the help. I just don't want to put the wrong price, in case I need to replace my gear.

Thanks!

-Adam

Subscribing out of curiosity.

My gut says quote it for the nearest replacement which would be the 5DMkII but I'm curious to see what the collective brain thinks on this.

Your best bet would be to ask your insurance provider. I asked my ex-wife (she's in insurance) and she said that if something is discontinued, they would replace at the current model. For instance, if either my MkII or MkIIn gets stolen, they could (but not guaranteed) replace it w/ the MkIII because it is still a current model. You couldn't, however, expect to have an XT replaced w/ the 1D MkIV. Again, ask your carrier. Their policy will dictate that.

As I am looking at prices, the "new" price for a 5D classic, is pretty much the same price as the 5DMII. At around $2,400. Would that number seem reasonable?

I could use as much advice is anyone else has done this or been in this situation before.

Last year I had my first DSLR stolen, a Rebel XT. Whether I had bought it new or used, the replacement cost that we were quoted (we sent in our own when we made our claim, and then the insurance company gave us their quote on what we would get back, we didn't fight it even though there was some difference) was of a new Rebel XS.

From my experience, it seems like if you are looking for replacement value, it would be of the similiar item (5dmkII or whatever the current mark version is) if you were to buy it out of a store.
