I shoot a lot for our church. A lot of the programs are in our "multi purpose" room. It has a suspended ceiling. There is usually no place to put a light stand that will not be in the way. And the last thing I want to do is shoot with the flash on the camera......

So I came up with the idea of a mount that will hold the flash from the suspended ceiling braces. Basically a flash mount for a light stand, but turned upside down and with some kind of hook to hold onto the brace so it can be adjustable in all directions and angels.

The idea is that you can mount the flashes to the ceiling and fire them wirelessly. You can move anywhere in the room and you know your stage will be lit fine.

Does anybody else think this might be a good idea or not?

I should have a prototype mid January to show.

I suspended my flashes from the braces of a suspended ceiling earlier this month. All it needed was a ball bungee with the ball shoved up above a tile and the flash snugly held by the bungee's elastic cord. If I'd needed to lower the flashes then I could have looped multiple bungees together. I don't have a picture of the setup but ball bungees are mentioned on the Strobist site as useful, and useful they are. I've got ten of them.

These are the sort of thing - http://www.tarpaulinsdirect.co.uk …insSite/product/BBB09.htm (external link)

Of course they can be used to lash a flash to all sorts of things - chair, heating pipe, light fitting, window latch, curtain cord, curtain track, cupboard handles etc. etc..

Have you ever spent any time backstage? Ever seen the hardware used for a theater lighting setup?

I saw something earlier this month as well that was a strong clamp (we used to use them in sailmaking to hold the sails while sewing). On that a post was welded and a flash bracket was attached to that. Was $50 though, which was outrageous for ~$10 in parts (at consumer cost).

When I worked events doing the lighting, we had something called airwall hangers. Most banquet rooms would have air walls to section off the larger spaces into smaller spaces, and we would use them to hang lighting.

There were some scary events when someone had the bright idea that it was ok to hand an entire truss of lighting.

Ah, to be young and stupid. I miss those days.

You can mount extenders like those from low/background light stands right into it.

Wow, and to think all this time I have been using trained monkeys to hang from the ceiling and hold my lighting! This will pay for itself in one shipment of bananas!

That bogen kit is on the pricey side. Several companies make clamps like this. here's a cheap one
