It makes sense that you would use live view when you use the tripod, NOT when hand holding.

Roughly an 80% crop, was sitting on the patio and decided to aim upwards and get a shot of the moon, tried live view and decided to just use the viewfinder. This is an effective 2200mm shot.

^^^^Nice shot, TS. How did you calculate the effective focal length? Adjusting for the 7D's crop factor gives you 500mm x 1.6 = 800mm. Then I assume you calculated the additional crop factor for the 80% crop, right? That's where my math skills fail me. I keep coming up with a factor that would make your shot closer to 4000mm, although I probably screwed something up. I'd be interested in knowing how to calculate that as I tend to make some serious crops.

I used a 2x and a 1.4x with the Sigma 50-500 OS on an APS-C. :)

500mm x 2 x 1.4 (x 1.6 for the effective FOV) = 2240mm mixed optical and crop FOV

Here was the full image, and it just about filled the frame completely vertically. I almost am considering springing for the Canon MKIII 2x, vs the Kenko I have. The lens + TC combos is giving me alot of CA at the edges of the frame. Most likely the cause of the lens though.

^ Welcome! Way to try out the 55-250, it is a fickle lens. :)

Do you have the exif available for that shot?

Aha, I see. Your EXIF just reported 500mm, so I was assuming no TCs. Now it all makes sense with much easier math. :D
