Thanks! I see what you mean about my shot being brighter than others. As a noob, though, I have no idea how to make mine darker. just glad it wasn't a fuzzy white ball.

Okay, a quick google suggests I need to try a shorter shutter speed.

Here's my first real attempt at the moon.

Cropped down and sharpened a tiny little bit. Using a 600D and a kit 75-300.

Ptcanon3ti, nice!

Ran into clouds, so this was my brief attempt. I'm finding it difficult to properly focus since the moon is so small.

Thank you. Clouds and atmosphere are always an issue when shooting the moon. I've been pretty luck we've had a nice clear stretch of weather lately.

Full moons are by far the hardest moon of all to get any detail in.

What do you mean when you say the moon is small?

Okay, a quick google suggests I need to try a shorter shutter speed.

The "formula" that was passed on to me was dubbed "The lunar-11 rule".

It works like the "Sunny 16" rule but using f/11: you set your ISO, and your aperture at f/11, and your shutter speed at 1/[ISO].

I typically use an ISO of 100, so the settings would be ISO 100, ss of 1/100, aperture f/11. So the outcome would be almost a step darker than your ISO 100, ss 1/125, f/8.

Another interesting approach can be to just set your exposure to where the bright moon is "centered" in your meter! It would tend to be darker yet!
