Shot of the full moon from last night. Stacked 20 images from my 70-300.
Sadly it didn't turn out as great as I hoped

It works like the "Sunny 16" rule but using f/11: you set your ISO, and your aperture at f/11, and your shutter speed at 1/[ISO]. I typically use an ISO of 100, so the settings would be ISO 100, ss of 1/100, aperture f/11. So the outcome would be almost a step darker than your ISO 100, ss 1/125, f/8. Another interesting approach can be to just set your exposure to where the bright moon is "centered" in your meter! It would tend to be darker yet! Thanks Tony. I'll try f11 next time. Think it will be cloudy the next few days here.

Clouds and atmosphere are always an issue when shooting the moon. I've been pretty luck we've had a nice clear stretch of weather lately. Full moons are by far the hardest moon of all to get any detail in. What do you mean when you say the moon is small? I...don't even know? Seriously, as my previous posts show, I should not post while sleep deprived. Of course, a faster shutter speed if the image is too bright. I knew that. For some reason, the word 'bright' was just not registering with me.

Sep 21, 2013 16:34 | #1827 Still very new at shooting the moon so any tips you have would be great. Normally I would shoot with a 70-200 f/2.8 and a 1.4x but had an opportunity to use the 600/4 for a week or so, so I had to take the opportunity. One of the toughest things with shooting with this lens is that when I try to go into live view and micro focus, i only had a few seconds before the moon was out of frame. Very difficult for a newbie like me. Very difficult for a newbie like me. Looking at your EXIF on one of the shots, your shutter speed was 1/60, which is really slow for a 600mm shot, tripod or not, as remember, even though you cant see it, the moon is a moving target. I would shoot for at least 1/800 or better. Don't be afraid to crank the ISO up to 200 or even 400. If you are not already, also either use a remote trigger or the timer to reduce any shake induced by activating the shutter. I would not use AE on a moon shot, as the moon is so bright it will fool your meter. Google "moon exposure calculator" and you will find a few good resources to start with for manual exposure. Also, try letting the auto focus work, especially on that piece of glass. Fuji XT-2, XT-3, Sony A1, A7RIV, A9, and an OM-1

Sep 21, 2013 17:00 | #1829 i couldnt find either of my 2 shutter releases so I ended up using the timer to run a few shots at a time. Not knowing what other settings to use I had it at Tv and set to 100 and 5.6. If I get a chance to shoot tonight I was gonna try f11 and move up to 200 or 400 iso. Stuff

Thank you for the tips, ill post up some more tonight or tomorrow if I can make it out tonight. I'd guess f11 is too tight, do you have a definite reason for going for f11?.. i.e. MTF curve? 30D, 18~55mm, 100mmf2.0, various Praktica, Atik 383L+ mono & filter wheel, 12" imaging telescope
