i had read somewhere else that between 8 and 11 would be ideal. Cant remember where from all the clicking I have been doing. I normally shoot sports and some animals so lunar photography is so far out of my wheelhouse I am just winging it. Any suggestion on settings would be great.

airbutchie - Joe was definitely right about adding contrast...

My guess is you'll top out 1 f-stop down on widest aperture.. HOWEVER.. once you're all set up I'd take a set at each aperture from widest down to f11... it's not much more work, then you can compare and contrast.

Oh in astro-imaging there are 4 Fs

Focus
Find
Frame
Fire

So Focus first, lock it down, then get the moon into frame... Finding isn't an issue with the moon of course.

Best rule for astro imaging is to experiment.

good luck

Derek

I like that with the 4 fs. Also last night i was trying to get it set up and then lock the tri pd, but if I am shooting at a fast enough shutter I could use the tri for stability but still have movement to be able to follow the moon right?

Yup.. same rules as daylight photography with short shots.. 1/fl means even hand held is possible, if you have a tripod then great.. You'll get something like 1/100th at 400mm or much better.

It's a good first try. I'd want a slightly faster shot to be honest, that would make it slightly sharper.

I hope you don't mind.. I had a play with sharpening using wavelets. It's best to apply wavelets to the image before curves etc.

The sharpening has brought up the noise, which could be dealt with by stacking multiple shots.

Good effort.

Thanks for the helpful tips. Here's one that I shot just a few minutes ago. f/11, 1/100, ISO 100.
