at 800mm and 10x live view zoom i can nail focus every time. sure it's shaky while i'm touching the lens, but it doesn't have to be still to be able to tell if a bright white object with sharp edge against a black background is in focus or not. it takes about 2 seconds after i let go for the shaking to stop, then click with remote. or use self timer.

I think my biggest problem is my tripod. It's an old crappy one, and it moves very sluggishly. It's a chore to get it to stay where I want it to...once it's locked it stays, but if I have something in the viewfinder, when I take my hand off of the camera, it moves a bit. Also, touching my camera when I am focused on something moves it so much that I can't tell if I'm in focus or not. Basically, unless I'm shooting something like a landscape, it's a crap shoot with this tripod.

What kind of a table do you use to put your computer (I am assuming laptop?) on for tethered shooting outdoors?

I just went out to my shed looking to see if I still have my old slide projector table, but alas I do not have it anymore.

I will need to look for a small table that will fold up nicely for storage.

Thank you for the idea!!

I just use a folding 2 step ladder as my laptop stand as it fits neatly in the car

Thanks man! I'm sure you'll get it. You've figured out the rest of the stuff you shoot. :)

Thank you. :)

Yep always do live view when I shoot the moon. I do the 10x magnification and manually focus.
Tripod with cable release.

I always shoot in manual mode and if I remember correctly...I think I was set to 1/40 at f8 ISO @125.

Try the following
1. Increase your shutter speed to 1/ focal lenght, open aperture to 7.1 or 8, i shoot 1/800 even 1/1000

OK, now I'm confused ???
