If you look at the specs and digit designations for Canon cameras, it appears that single digit models are the top of the range, double digit are mid range and triple digit entry level...

In the first set, the smaller the number, the higher spec, in the second set, the reverse...not sure about entry level ones...

Even folded in, it's still somewhat vulnerable to damage, and especially dirt and sand. When I'm doing astrophotography, I usually bring along my laptop, connect it to the camera, and use it to see what I'm focusing on.

This is pretty accurate with a small exception. The 10D, 20D, 30D, etc. use increasingly larger numerals for newer versions/models.
Same goes for the G series. Larger numbers equal newer models.

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

Also, the 7d is somewhat of an exception. I believe it is the only single digit camera (using the mentioned naming convention) without a full frame sensor.

Actually, the 1D mark one had a 1.3 crop sensor. I think everyone there after was full frame.
This is the first article I found on the 1D.
Sorry about sending you guys to Dpreview.

Fair enough. I should, perhaps, have specified modern DSLRs.

I don't think a full frame sensor existed for DSLRs at the time of the 1D introduction.

Anyway, I think we may be polluting this thread with our OT discussion. Apologies to those that may be annoyed by it.

The 7DII is an exception on several levels.

Obviously, the fact that it is a single digit designated camera (in all other models, designating a FF sensor) but is also a crop body.

Its high performance in not only speed (10fps is nothing to sneeze at), but also in sophistication where focusing is concerned (with 65 'all cross point' AF points).

Even the new 5DIV lags behind this in speed (maybe expected as it's not a 'sport' oriented model) and focus ability...
