Thank you! Sorry I am bit late to the party... was visiting my daughter, husband and son in the confederate state of Virginia.

I say confederate because when I made purchases there the change I received back was not the same as the change I get here in the northern state of Indiana!

I will show you the change in another thread that I have yet to make.

I will provide a link when that project is done.

HERE is the LINK

Ahh yes. Your error is totally understandable. The haze... The pollution... It affects transparency, how clear it looks. But seeing is about atmospheric turbulence. Here where I live transparency is great! To the naked eye and even viewing at magnification the moon looks pristine and spectacular..... But on a more close look it's is often boiling and shaking all over the place. For resolution good seeing is more important than good transparency.

Many thanks Mike for that very informative and educational response. Learn something new everyday!

Last night's 34.8 percent..... as you can see, I almost did not catch it! Here, just about to drop below my neighbors roof, it was just barely dark enough to shoot with the gear I had set up with.

Mighty impressive, and great work !

The BTS shot made me think - and reminded me of my last few (not nearly as good) attempts at shooting the moon: I seem to remember getting a few curious looks from the neighbors, and I felt a little bit self-conscious, shooting over the rooftops, but near windows, very much like your setup. I was eager to explain to anyone who would listen that I was JUST taking photos of the moon, and nothing else.

I'm mainly here for the snacks

Very nice Paul! I like the colour you got in this. I miss colour in my moon shots. There are a couple ways for me to add the colour back and still retain the detail I get with my mono camera, but I just have not got around to learning how yet.

Yes.... I know what you mean. Its fine on my little street.... everyone knows everyone and I am well known to setup my stuff for moon gazing. BUT.... before I had such an elaborate setup I used to travel to spots I thought might be better with my DSLR gear. There was one little dead end street at the top of a nearby big hill (or small mountain) I used to set up at occasionally ("money" neighborhood) . There were a few parking stalls in the middle of the turn around and I set up there - sometimes at 2 or 3 in the morning. The last time I was there, on my way out as I was turning off the street, two police cars turned in quickly with their searchlights on. Although I am relatively sure I had as much right to park there as anyone, I am still glad I missed the hassle of confrontation - sometimes my mouth can get me in trouble if I am pi**ed off.

People are such asses.

edit".... Oh, and thanks! :)

Thanks Mike. To be honest I am colour blind so my shot looks grey and black to me anyway:)

This is a photo of the moon I took in January of this year. I had hoped to get the moon centered on the tor (Glastonbury Tor, England) but got my position wrong. I am planning to have another go and will try the settings recommended on this thread next time.

I took this shot of the Moon at 8:13 this evening. It was 95° outside at the time. I'm surprised it turned out this sharp.

Bulldawg534,

You did an absolute phenomenal job shooting the moon with the 70-300 lens and your new 90D!!!!

That photo is KILLER SHARP! Very crystal clear indeed!!

What do you think of the 90D now? I remember just yesterday you said this: ;-)a

Bulldawg534 wrote in post #19101854 (external link)
I have since upgraded to the 90D so I am excited to see what it can do.
