Stacked 2x and 1.4x reduces the amount of light three stops. So yes you can try to compensate either by ISO or shutter speed from just the plain lens, you just have to decide which is least detrimental.

The advantage of using a mirrorless camera is shooting with 'lighting effects on'. The image in the viewfinder is exactly how the captured image will look and adjusting shutter speed for example immediately shows the scene getting brighter or dimmer in manual mode. Another advantage of the 61mp sensor on the Sony a7r4 is that in crop mode, the resolution is still 26mp. I have a button assigned to toggle APS-C mode on and off.

Yes you may now end up with a 26mpx result but that result had now "drilled" into the image expanding the view of noise, motion, etc. This is why it would be better, if possible, to get as large an optical result onto that sensor first, then crop. As long as the TC and lens results are good, you can clean up noise, get better detail, etc and you can then resample down too if it is still too large.

One stop means you have to change one of the three factors of exposure (or partials of each):

1. You are doubling your ISO if you lose a stop, or halving it if you gain a stop.

2. You are halving your shutter speed if you lose a stop, or doubling it if you gain a stop.

3. You are going to open up your fstop (ex. f/4 to f/2.8) if you lose a stop, or going to close down your fstop (ex. f/4 to f/5.6) if you gain a stop.

Shooting the moon with TCs means you likely are going to run as open an aperture you can, so you can only really play with points 1 and 2. You either lower your shutter speed or raise your ISO (or a combination).

Summary:

If you lose a stop of light, you will raise your ISO, or lower your shutter speed, or open up your fstop, or some combination.

If you gain a stop of light, you will lower your ISO, raise your shutter speed, or close down your fstop, or some combination.

Thank you very much!

Yep, that's why I've always used either my 1.4 or 2x extenders on my 200-600mm lens for my Moon shots so far. The Sony extenders don't stack so it's one or the other at a time.

It's annoying that the newest Canon TC don't stack either. The mk ii did however.

well the IQ is much better and AF is improved from camera to lens through the TC, so not really. Most folks aren't stacking TCs to lose 3 stops of light either. One of these two is a higher priority than the other.

Thank you. You just unknowingly answered a question I did have that now I do not have to ask!

The Sony FE 200-600mm Lens isn't in the POTN Gear database yet so here are the details for this shot. 600mm, f9 @ 1/100th, iso 100. No extender used for this shot, just cropped in post.

That looks to have some very sharp detail Gene. Wouldn't mind seeing a much closer crop of part of the moon. Curious as to how the detail would show up.

That's an almost 100% crop. Here's a 200 percenter.
