Thank you!

Another newbie moon shooter here. You may find this Youtube video I found for processing moon shots useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuONUWoIVeM (external link) Very easy to follow, I did the step-by-step and did very well with it. The programs he recommends are also free, which is nice.

Lovely moon last night but rose so late and low against the horizon that it didn't clear the trees before bed time .. so , which to shoot ? The trees or the moon ? A bit of both !

Sheer Lunacy...

When I was stuck in traffic with 16km to go to my spot at 4:45PM, I was beginning to think I was heading on a fools errand. Time as marching on, I had a long way to go and the street was a parking lot... However, I got there in the end and had a whole 5 minutes once I was in location before the moon came up.

I had referenced the Photographers Ephemeris application to find out where I should be located to get the moon to rise beside the city's tallest building, Sky Tower.

I took my trusty Canon EOS R5, with the Sigma 60-600. On wide shots I used the camera full frame, but for close-ups of the moon I switched to 1.6 crop mode, giving me up to 960mm Equivalent Field of Capture.

So, here are some results, all shot from a monopod

Inspeqtor, it is interesting how the craters on the extreme edge of your shot seem to stand out, and the craters on my attempt seem subdued. I am wondering if atmospherics or moisture in our current very humid air would affect the sharpnessin my photo ?......or you and your gear are superior.. :-)

Try this website:

You can find your location by state (I like the map option), then the reporting/forecast station. It will give you cloud status, visibility, distortion, etc. Quite helpful.

Thank you golfecho, but it does not appear to cover the UK, now searching for something similar here :-)

You are so very kind with your words Pantry42. This was my photo SOOC (straight out of camera) but believe me, my photos are far from superior!

I have many nights where I have trouble getting my camera to focus like I know it can and has focused before.

According to flickr, where I place the only images worth keeping, it says 480mm, my D7500 has a crop sensor factor so it probably comes out a tad more than that !
