I saw these amazing portraits from a nat geo photographer and I'm not 100% on how he lit this...

are they two softboxes? or are they just two windows to outside?

It is either two huge light panels or just two diffusion screens. Given that he was on-site and probably couldn't count on having power, I'm going to guess it is diffusion fabric setup in front of a bright door or entryway.

Concur. The secret is in the eyes. I used to hate it when i would get dragged off to the department store perfume counter by gf. Now i just take the opportunity to study the lighting setups.

Two diffusion screens? How would that work infront of a door? would there be dark fabric between it to stop the other light?

Yes indeed. What do you reckon he's doing?

I changed my mind. I think they are battery powered light panels.

Check out a video of Martin Schoeller doing a photo shoot to get an idea of his shooting (and lighting) style.

At the bottom of the youtube comments, somebody supplied this info.

great to see him behind the scenes!, he is a great photographer and uses a very nice lighting setup. As I can see: two strip lights each side, one strobe bottom and one on the top, two for the bg and a huge large format camera. Very similar to Jill Greenberg

Thanks, why would he have the 2 strip boxes, and then a strobe on top and one on bottom?

By the catchlights, it looks like 2 strip boxes and a light over head, possibly a softbox rather than a BD by the shape.

I doubt whether the background was separately lit.

It looks like they're just standing in front of a big window.
