I ordered another ( different color ) muslin today. Denny mfg has some on sale....the one I am getting is 60% off. That made a $230 muslin pretty affordable. Can't wait to get it and play with a "denim blue" BG.

I'm still trying to decide which one of their 'freedom cloth' BG's to get. I'm trying to be pretty selective about BG's so I can be versitile without having to have a whole bunch of them.

Muslin may be the way to go [I've never bought one yet] but I was caught up with what you said about having purchased "denim blue". I just recently bought 24 feet of denim for $3.75 a foot on sale. I cut two lengths of 12 feet and seal the two pieces together with iron on tape to give me 10 feet of width x 12 feet of length. The cost for me was $90.00. Fabric stores are awesome places to get those backdrops and so far I always find that the employees seem to know what the photographers want and need . Depending on the material, you can come out with some backdrops costing as little as $ 50.00

The only problem is that not all fabric stores (Jo-Ann's included) have material that is wider that about 60". Some materials come wider and some can be ordered slightly wider but it's difficult to find and unless you always shoot at a DOF to blur out a seam you'll always see it. I tried making a giant background but the seam was always apparent and I either had to shoot at a very shallow DOF or use Photoshop in post.

hadn't thought of the seams, cause the $250 price I saw for a muslim put me off.

I do know a brand that comes in 142 inches wide I think. And lucky for me my husband can sew;)

I also know where to get fabric dyes if anyone needs them.

Still wonder if making it yourself comes out as good

Our local Joanns has muslin fabric in 120" widths (or might have been 108"). Can't remember the exact price, but I bought 6 or 7 yards of the fabric along with a 40% coupon for between $20 and $30.

I get my muslin from JoAnn, they run a lot of specials for 50% off.

The best thing to do is to get on their mailing list or visit the store because they will have the coupons there.

They do sell a 120" muslin

The last home made backdrop I did from them for about $25

Your local Wal-Mart carries "Rit" liquid dye for your muslin's. Has always worked well for me.

Yup, they have both. For those that are looking you will find it (at least in our local store) in the quilting area. It is used as quilt backer by many quilters so that they don't have seams in the backs of their quilts. If you ask, they can show you. The girl asked me what project I was sowing and she was surprised when I told her photo back drop. They only had the white and cream colors in stock at my local store but with some paint and dye, I can make about anything. Rick

I even found muslin 120" at walmart for 4.99 a yard. 4 yards would cost around $20. I am going to try the dye. Rick

Wow, that's so interesting. I'm on Long Island, New York and typically we can get anything here but the large Joann's out here didn't have anything wider than 60" or so. Perhaps not everyone knows where to find wider material or it's not in an apparent place but the few times I looked I didn't see anything.

I'll have to get some assistance when I'm there next time and see if someone knows where to find the wide muslin.

Thanks Rick, that's good to know. I'll check it out.
