Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L physically DROPPED!

My friend unfortunately dropped his 25-70 from about 1m when
the lens was in its widest state. The lens focus motor does not work
anymore, but it still works with the manual zoom. The lens elements
are still fine, just that the barrel is a bit wobbly now.

Has this ever happened to anyone? If yes, what did you do? Did you
send it back to Canon and have them repaired?

Is there anybody out there who buys broken lenses?

Please advise....

Send it to Canon. The repair is probably going to be expensive.

My 28-70 f2.8L dropped and broke at the mount in July. I sent it to Canon and they were able to repair for what I thought was a reasonable price of $240 USD. I'd send it to Canon for a free estimate.

DId your autofocus also break? How did it affect your lens function?

Yes actually, twice!

It's about a $250 repair to completely make the lens as good as new from Canon service.

Makes one question the benefits of L build quality.

not really the L's can be repaired the non-L would just be destroyed. :p

Could be.

I've had my 28-75 attached to a camera fly off the front seat of my car onto the floor twice with no damage whatsoever. You'd think I'd learn after the first time ;-)a

Canon repairs are expensive, but they're surely worth it. I sent my 28-70L in for service and it cost $151 USD (this was only for calibration). It came back looking great, but I'm still testing it.

I wouldn't go that far. I've dropped a couple non-L lenses from 4-5 ft. with minimal damage. Maybe I was just lucky, but build quality of L lenses is overrated IMHO.

The mount completely broke off of the lens. The lens was totally and completely inoperable. Considering the total amount of my investment on the lens, $240 seemed very reasonable for the the repair. Lens came back looking better than when I sent it in.

I'm gonna tell my friend to relieve him! We were thinking of different things to try
and minimize the damage!

I think the lens was damaged because the lens extends as it zooms to the wider end. The impact was probably amplified because it was the lens was in its weakest state, and the impact knocked something loose with af.

For the record, i have dropped several L lenses, and also in general abused my lenses, and they all work perfectly. I dont intentionally abuse my gear, but it just comes with what I do.
