Have shot my first real attempts at macro photography. Would like some constructive comments. These were made using a Canon Rebel T1i with Canon 55-250 with Canon closeup 500D attached and a Speedlite 430 EX light source. The ISO was 100 using manual at f32 @1/200. The sea urchin is on a platform that is 22mm in diameter. Is this lens sufficient or would I do better with a dedicated macro lens. Thanks for your suggestions.

Not too bad for a kit lens and a dioptre. There is a fair bit of detail in the urchin and in the Zygo catus. Most macro shooters don't shoot much at the F32 range, we're more likely to use F11.

As to the question is this lens the right one, well only you can answer this. Personally I'd stick with it for a bit and make sure Macro is something you are really keen on. Then once you are sure about this I'd think about purchasing a true macro lens.

I used to have a quite flexible Sony H5, after revisiting 2 years of shoots concluded that the better opportunities were in macro (there were monqueys and tucanos here too but much more episodic than insects). So I decided to purchase dedicated macro gear. But this depends a lot of how muc % of your photos are macro.

Good shots. A dedicated macro lens will be capable of sharper shots and higher magnifications - think your max mag with this setup is around 0.5:1.
